Health Insurance Guidelines

University for Peace policy requires that any full-time or part-time student enrolled in an MA programme must provide evidence of insurance coverage that meet the following criteria:

  • Coverage must apply to the full time or part time period of study
  • A Minimum of US$ 5,000 coverage per episode
  • Hospitalization and medical attention should be covered
  • Repatriation of remains should also be included
  • Pre-authorization for hospitalization and/or surgical intervention

The following documents must be provided to the Department of Academic Administration as proof of health insurance:

  • Photocopy of the insurance card
  • Copy of the insurance contract clearly stating the following information:
    • Name of the student,
    • Description of coverage
    • Date coverage begins
    • Date coverage ends (must be at least one month after the end of the academic programme at UPEACE)
  • Address, phone number and fax number of the insurance provider


Throughout the years we have learned that not all insurance policies work properly in Costa Rica. Students are advised to avoid the purchase of the following insurance products:

  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Medicare / Medicaid
  • United Healthcare
  • Aetna
  • Humana
  • Cigna
