Statement of Qualifications

Essential Qualifications for the Position:

  1. Higher education degree: PhD, J.D. or Master’s Degree from a recognized institution
  2. Academic expertise and recognized            experience in the field of international law            and human rights.
  3. Publications in related fields.
  4. Academic contacts at the international            level.
  5. Experience in educational institutions or            settings.
  6. Meets the following requirements with            respect to professional experience :
  • With a Ph.D., 5 years of professional experience.

       Or

    • With a Master’s Degree, 10 years of professional experience (or with a J.D., 8 years of related experience). 

Knowledge

 

  1. In-depth knowledge of the field of International Law and Human Rights.
  2. Broad knowledge of UPEACE’s mandate and objectives.

Abilities and Skills

  1. Teaching skills, including participatory methodologies and other innovative approaches.
  2. Ability to address problems and complaints tactfully, courteously and effectively.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with UPEACE staff and departments worldwide.
  4. Ability to plan, supervise and coordinate effectively the activities of the department, all its programmes and affiliates.
  5. Capacity to undertake several responsibilities at the same time.

Personal Suitability

Job Description

General Responsibilities for the Position:

  1. Designs the general strategy of the department in accordance with the Vision and Mission of UPEACE.
  2. Supervises the teaching, research and different activities in the department.
  3. Represents the department in all internal and external meetings when they are convened, and delegates to other staff when necessary.
  4. Ensures submission of programme and department reports on activities according to UPEACE and funder requirements.
  5. Responsible for the planning and accountability for funds provided to the department in collaboration with department staff.
  6. Selects and recommends the proper staff for the department following established institutional policies and procedures.
  7. Evaluates and ensures proper evaluation of all staff in the department, programmes and affiliates.

Specific Responsibilities for the Position:

  1. Prepares, in coordination with the department staff, a yearly Plan of Action and the Annual Reports.
  2. Evaluates the effectiveness of the department in meeting objectives by reviewing data, reports and surveys.
  3. Ensures that the department staff keeps abreast of current developments in education in general and their own subject area in particular.
  4. Administers budgetary and financial matters within the department, including financial accounting, budget preparation and allocation of funds among departmental programmes and staff.
  5. Within institutional policies and guidelines, writes proposals for potential donors, follows up negotiations and provides all necessary information to those who are in charge of the fundraising process.
  6. Maintaining liaisons with leaders in government, other universities, civil society groups and professional societies.
  7. To be responsible for the arrangements of the external and internal evaluations of the department and its programmes and affiliates in coordination with the Office of the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs.
  8. Teaches in the academic programme of the department and in courses of other UPEACE departments according to academic plans and faculty workload policy.

Depending on experience and qualifications, the successful candidate will be hired either as Associate Professor with the following monthly salary range US$3,886 – US$5,052
or as Professor with a monthly salary range of US$6,254 – US$8,131
