Second Summer Peace Institute with University of California at Berkeley begins at UPEACE campus

BACK

05 June 2012

Location: Campus Rodrigo Carazo (CRC), UPEACE.

On the beginning of June UPEACE started the second Summer Peace Institute with the University of California, Berkeley (UCB).

This course on Human Security and Peacebuilding gathers 34 advanced undergraduate students from Berkeley, one UPEACE external student and 7 UPEACE alumni. Ten students from the group of Berkeley are part of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU). IARU "is a collaboration between ten of the world's leading research-intensive universities who share similar visions for higher education, in particular the education of future leaders". The IARU students come from Australian National University, ETH Zurich, University of Copenhagen, University of Tokyo, and Yale University.

The course will be taught by Professors: Jerry Sanders, Chair, Peace and Conflict Studies, UCB, Amr Abdalla, Victoria Fontan, Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo, and Claudio Ansorena. Three UPEACE alumni will be Course Assistants.

"The idea of the Summer Peace Institute is to bring together students from around the world for the purposes of dialogue on Human Security and practice in Peacebuilding. With the principles upon which UPEACE was founded, the rich worldwide diversity of its student body, and the many opportunities for field placement in Costa Rica, UPEACE has proven the ideal location for this initiative", said Dr. Jerry Sanders, Chair Peace and Conflict Studies from University of California at Berkeley.

The course runs from 4th June to 13th July and the students will be doing their community service during the last three weeks of the programme in different Costa Rican organisations.
