UPEACE Sustainability Club Sponsors Tap Water

BACK

26 July 2012

Location: Campus Rodrigo Carazo, San José, Costa Rica.

The UPEACE Sustainability Club recently allocated new water stations around the campus offering hot, cold and room temperature water, as a result of a petition and proposal to phase out plastic bottles from the university’s water coolers.

sustainabilityThe water for these new stations come from the mountain streams of El Rodeo, which regular tests show is safe to drink and very rich in minerals. Furthermore, each water station has two different filters ensuring cleaner and tastier water.

The new water stations not only avoid using plastic bottles but also save money for the university; the savings obtained will be allocated to other cost-efficient sustainable projects from the club.

Other campus sustainability projects include a new solar oven, located outside the cafeteria terrace where the community can heat their food as an alternative way to using
microwaves, the new Peace Garden, which has been made possible through community donations, student volunteer labour, and the efforts of numerous UPEACE students and
staff plus recycling stations that have been positioned strategically around campus.

?The Sustainability Club would like to thank the entire UPEACE community for its cooperation and help in the process of implementing the different projects.

Through different fundraising initiatives, the club has raised USD $1,300 in the last year and is looking for major donors to achieve their long term goal: for UPEACE to become carbon neutral by 2021, allowing the University to turn into a model institution in the region using best sustainable practices.
