UN DELEGATIONS WOMENS CLUB LAUNCHES INITIATIVE IN SUPPORT OF UPEACE 29 May 2008 - UN General Assembly, New York. The UN Delegations Women's Club (UNDWC) has launched a project known as WOMEN for PEACE for promoting participation of women, particularly young women, in peace processes, and strengthening of their influence in the construction of cultures of peace. Call for Book Reviews and Briefings- Africa Peace and Conflict Journal 20 June 2007 - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Researchers from any discipline political science, media studies, law, sociology, etc are invited to submit book reviews and briefings for publication. The APCJ will endeavour to publish reviews reflecting a diversity of topics and a diversity of approaches. Book reviews should be 1,500 words maximum and briefings should be 2,000 words maximum, there will be a preference for reviews of decisive works that have transformed global thinking in the past thirty years. It is hoped that these reviews and briefings will serve to address the growing demand for research on the continent.

UPEACE and University of Winnipeg Summer Peacebuilding Institute 19 June 2006-23 June 2008 - Winnepeg, Manitoba. UPEACE Professor Victoria Fontan taught as part of a team of professors in the inaugural summer peacebuilding institute of UPEACE and the University of Winnipeg. The institute focussed on "Multiethnic Cities and Peacebuilding:Linking the Global and the Local" and was attended enthusiastically by both tertiary students and community practitioners.
Training of Trainers Seminar on "Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding" 13-16 June 2006 - Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Following the course development seminar on "Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding" held in Dushanbe in February 2006, a training of trainers seminar took place during 13-16 June 2006 as the next important step of a Norway-funded project. The aim of the seminar was to finalize the course curricula developed during the first seminar in February, to train educators, trainers and civil society representatives on using the academic and training models and to discuss with participants how to best apply various teaching resources for practical teaching and training. The specific educational objective of the course on Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding consists of developing and spreading concepts and skills for dealing with conflicts through alternative mechanisms for dispute resolution which spring from a combination of authentic Islamic knowledge and traditions, and contemporary academic and practical resources in the field of peace and conflict studies.

Earth Charter Delegates Meet with President-Elect Oscar Arias 06 April 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. Delegates from Earth Charter International and the University for Peace met yesterday with President-Elect Oscar Arias of Costa Rica to discuss areas of potential collaboration during Mr. Arias' term of office. Mr. Arias, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was recently re-elected after years away from political office, will be inaugurated on 8 May 2006. The Costa Rican government has traditionally been a strong supporter of the Earth Charter in international fora, such as the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2004 World Congress of the IUCN.
Short Course on Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution (CPMR) 3-7 April 2006 - Pretoria, South Africa. In accordance with one of the aims of UPEACE to develop and increase capacity in the teaching of conflict and peace studies in Africa, the UPEACE Africa Programme has recently concluded a short course on Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution. The course was held in Pretoria from 3 to 7 April 2006 with participants form 16 African countries.
Advanced Studies in Environmental Diplomacy 1 April-31 May 2006 - Geneva, Switzerland. Admission process is now open for the certificate course of advanced studies in Environmental Diplomacy. This course comprises 10 modules, partly given in an intensive two-week course period in Geneva during 26 August-10 September 2006, preceded by a period of distance learning in July-August 2006, and followed by preparation of a thesis. This course is a joint effort of the United Nations Environment Programme, the University of Geneva, UNITAR and University for Peace. Vera Narodnitzkaia, Director of the Central Asia Programme, represented UPEACE at this partnership and co-ordinated the development of UPEACE's module. Another module coordinator, Tom Deligiannis, Assistant Professor of UPEACE, will teach the module on Environmental Diplomacy during the face-to-face teaching session in Geneva.

International Committee of the Red Cross and the University for Peace signed the II Memorandum of Agreement 10 March 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. On Friday, 10 March 2006, Messrs. Daniel Glinz, Deputy Regional Delegate of the ICRC, and Georges Tsaï, Vice Rector of UPEACE, signed the II Memorandum of Agreement between the International Committee of the Red Cross and the University for Peace. Through this MOA the ICRC will continue supporting education on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and implementing the principles and norms of this field of law in order to apply the new objectives defined by ICRC in all agreements to be signed with universities and higher-education institutions.
International Women' s Day 08 March 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. March 8th is International Women's Day and will be celebrated at UPEACE by a student-run production of Eve Ensler's famous international play "The Vagina Monologues." Students Elisa Audo, Junyke Zulu and Alex MBallo from the MA in Gender and Peace Building are coordinating the activity with the support of twenty-five students who are also part of the production. The activity will take place in the Council Room from 5 to 7pm.
UPEACE Professor attended a workshop in Turkey 6-8 March 2006 - Istanbul, Turkey. From 6-8 March 2006, professor Jennifer Hazen attended a workshop on "Building National Capacities for Conflict Prevention and Transformation". The workshop was held in Istanbul, Turkey, and was hosted jointly by the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Department of Political Affairs. The workshop, attended by nearly 100 participants, focused on understanding new and emerging approaches to conflict prevention and conflict transformation, sharing national experiences of UN country teams, and developing concrete practical strategies for furthering the efforts of the UN in areas of building social cohesion and promoting good governance, development, and peacebuilding.

AMMAN (JT) A delegation from the UN-affiliated University of Peace (UPEACE) visited the Kingdom last week to take practical steps towards the establishment of a regional centre for peace-building and conflict resolution in partnership with UPEACE. On Tuesday, February 21st, Peace Education students Nick (U.S.A), Brandon (U.S.A), Geoff (Canada), Koe (Japan), Zahid (Pakistan), Dody (Indonesia) and Azad (Bangladesh) participated in a public presentation, with their programme director, Prof. Abelardo Brenes Ph.D., of the State of the Nation Report on Education in Costa Rica. Every year since 1995, the four Costa Rican public universities have jointly published a report on the State of the Nation in Sustainable Human Development, in an effort to provide public access to vital trends in Costa Rican development. It serves as a kind of social, economic, environmental, and political mirror for the society and is influential in governmental policy-making

Earth Charter Education Center Training in Stockholm 12-15 February 2006 - Sweden. What do a compass, an amoeba, a pyramid, and the stratosphere have in common? The staff of the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development at UPEACE were wondering the very same thing before our recent training seminar in Sweden from Feb. 12 -15. They are in fact the names of tools and methods for working towards sustainability and include indicators for sustainability (Compass), a methodology for building consensus on sustainable development planning (Pyramid), strategies for diffusing change (Amoeba) and strategic analysis tools (StrateSphere).

Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Director of the Department of Human Rights and Social Affairs with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the UPEACE campus on 9 February 2006. She offered a lecture focusing on the initiative led by Brazil, in partnership with France, Chile, Spain, Germany and Algeria, to establish the International "Action against Hunger and Poverty". UPEACE professors teach an opening module in Sri Lanka 07 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. From 7-11 February 2006, professors Amr Abdalla and Jennifer Hazen taught the opening module of the Diploma in Conflict Resolution course in Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies in Colombo. This module, attended by 41 participants, provided participants with an introduction to the theories and practice of conflict resolution. This module acts as the foundation for the remainder of the program. The participants came from a wide range of backgrounds, including the military, the government, and local and international NGOs. Participants actively engaged in the course through group discussions, simulations, and group presentations.

Last week, a total of 125 students and participants started the UPEACE INSTITUTE with a 2-day skills building workshop on Cross-Cultural Communication and Ethical Decision Making. The workshop was conducted by experienced, world-renowned trainers from LEAD International: Gillian Martin-Mehers and Gitanjali Bedi. In a highly interactive, fun environment, students and participants from over 40 countries shared and learned cultural experiences and pondered related questions of ethics and decision making.

Course on Governance, International Law, and Human Rights 19 October 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. From 20 September to 7 October, Hassan El Menyawi, one of the United Nations-mandated University for Peace's professors, has been teaching a course called "Governance, International Law, and Human Rights." It is a course designed for students studying in the departments of International Peace and Conflict Studies, Peace Education, and Environmental Security and Peace. The course was also open to students from the Natural Resources Department, and two students from that department enrolled.

Workshop in Escuela Finca la Caja, la Carpio 03 August 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. A workshop was facilitated by the M.A. Programme in Peace Education, of UPEACE, on August 3, 2005. It is the first of a series of seven workshops that will be offered this year to the staff of the school. The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Education, which consider it a priority activity within a new policy of Integral Prevention and Human Development that the Ministrys Regional Directorate of San José is developing within the "Education for All Framework".

UPEACE celebrates its Commencement 2005 24 June 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 24 June 2005, the University for Peace conferred graduate degrees upon 82 students from 36 countries. The ceremony was held at the UPEACE campus, located in Ciudad Colón, Costa Rica.
Each graduate received one of the following six Master's degrees: Gender and Peace Building, International Law and Human Rights, International Law and the Settlement of Disputes, Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, International Peace Studies and Peace Education.
78 Children celebrated the International Tree Day at the UPEACE campus 15 June 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 15 June 2005, 78 children from the Santa Mónica School in Costa Rica visited the campus of the University for Peace, located in Ciudad Colón, to celebrate International Tree Day. The children arrived at 9:00 a.m., along with teachers and various relatives who came to support their children for the activity.
UPEACE held two important annual Meetings: The Second Meeting of the Strategic Planning Group and the Third Session of the International Academic Council 20 May 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. Course Development and Training Seminar on Regional Water Resources and Peacebuilding 22-26 April 2005 - Almaty, Kazakhstan. Regional Water Resources and Peacebuilding, April 2005: Almaty, Kazakhstan UPEACE Course Development and Training Seminar on Regional Water Resources and Peacebuilding in Almaty was attended by forty-five participants from various countries such as Afghanistan, Canada, Finland, Kazazkhstan, Kyrgyztan, Russia, Sweden, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Kingdom, United States and Uzbekistan. This course focused on worldwide experience in preventing conflict though regional management of water resources, while at the same time integrating experience from Central Asia itself. Such a course is of great relevance to all Central Asian countries and serves the dual purpose of training experts and professors already engaged in research and policy-making in this sensitive area of intra-regional relations. As a result of this seminar, the CAP is developing a multi-media package and a compendium of material, which will serve both teaching and training modules both for use in the universities in the region as well as throughout UPEACEs worldwide teaching network.
Glimpsing Human Rights Eternity: Makau Mutua at UPEACE 07 April 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On February 25, the director of the Human Rights Center at Buffalo Law School of the State University of New York (SUNY), professor and post-colonial scholar Makau Mutua made a presentation to the students and faculty of UPEACE. Largely based on his book Human Rights: A Political and Cultural Critique, his presentation brought discernible joy and excitement to the audience.
UPEACE celebrates the Cultural Festival 2005 17 March 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 17 March 2005, the University for Peace carried out its second annual cultural festival. "Cultural Festival 2005: Expressing Freedom" took place on the University for Peace campus with the participation of approximately 100 students, staff and families from the surrounding community.

For the first time in the history of its revitalization, UPEACE has organized an academic event in collaboration with a Costa Rican counterpart. UPEACE student wins prize for Best Oral Presentation in National Round of Jessup Competition 03 March 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. Last month, UPEACE students from the International Law Programme participated in the national round of the 2005 Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition in San José, Costa Rica. The competition, which took place on Feb. 7, pitted the UPEACE team against a team of students from the University of Costa Rica, and although the victory went to UCR, the judges considered it a very close call.

Following the first meeting of the Regional MA Media for Peace which took place in June/July 2003 in Butare (Rwanda), UPEACE organised a follow up consultative meeting on the subject, in Bujumbura (Burundi). The meeting brought together media and communication professionals from UPEACE partner universities in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Al Día recognizes UPEACE Peace Park 11 February 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. In its 26 January 2005 issue, Al Día, one of Costa Ricas leading newspapers, recognized the University for Peace Park as one of the most beautiful and most frequently visited parks. The faculty, students, and staff of the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE) celebrated Human Rights Day on 10 December , 2004. Students, faculty, and staff began the day, remembering the significance of Human Rights Day as the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is regarded as a day of hope that arose from the ashes of the atrocities of the Second World War and the Holocaust. Several administrators and faculty members paid homage to those who believe in a possible future in which the nation-states of the world would respect human rights in their relations with other nations and with their own citizens.
UPEACE President Emeritus awarded with an Honorary Degree 04 January 2005 - Alabama. On 11 December 2004, Dr. Rodrigo Carazo, President Emeritus and founder of the University for Peace, received an honorary degree from the University of South Alabama during its fall commencement 2004. The ceremony took place at the USA Mitchell Center where Carazo addressed nearly 1,400 students.

Japanese Peace Mission plants Peace Pole at the UPEACE Recreational Park 29 November 2004 - San José, Costa Rica. On 30 November 2004, a group of 20 Japanese volunteers from the World Peace Prayer Society visited the University for Peace to plant a Peace Pole at the UPEACE recreational park. While twenty-five students from the nearly Rodeo School and representatives from Tropical Sierra, a non-governmental organization in Costa Rica and UPEACE staff members attended the ceremony.

UPEACE Students organized the Africa Day 23 November 2004 - San José, Costa Rica. Distance Learning Course on the Role of the Media in the Rwanda Genocide 08 November 2004 . In this distance learning course you will study the different facets of the media role in the genocide in detail. You will see how easily the concept of free speech and free press in a local situation can be perverted for foul ends. We will ask how this dilemma could be resolved. We will explore the problem of inadequate or even distorted international coverage of crises and conflicts in areas poorly understood by Western journalists. We will consider whether this unfortunate situation can be improved in the future.

Pre-electoral Conflict Prevention Seminar 22-26 October 2004 - Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Pre-electoral Conflict Prevention Seminar October 2004: Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan Twenty representatives of the Kyrgyz government together with judges, journalists, municipal leaders and academics took part in a Pre-electoral Conflict Prevention Seminar in Kyrgyzstan. This initiative was organised in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Political Affairs (UNDPA) and the UN Mission in Bishkek. The main focus of this practitioners seminar was to provide a format for analysing the major issues related to conflict prevention and transformation prior and during election period and to enable the participants to timely recognise, map and address conflict situation. As an immediate outcome of the seminar, the "code of conduct" for various players during the election period was developed, based both on international and Kyrgyz experience and context. The seminar outline became a part of CAP training package, which can be offered both as a case study for academic teaching and in a training format for civil society representatives and the staff of international organisations involved in election process.
UPEACE students organized a Culture for Peace Festival 2004 20 October 2004 - San José, Costa Rica. This year's first annual Cultures of Peace Festival brought together over 100 people in Macondo, a community launch located in Ciudad Colón on Thursday 20th October 2004. The final meeting of the Program on Conflict and Collaboration in Natural Resource Management in Latin America and the Caribbean (CyC) was held in Bogotá, Colombia, between August 30 and September 11, 2004. Aimed at sharing the outcome of phase 2, identifying the main lessons learned during phases 1 and 2, and establishing a set of principles in order to prepare publications with case studies, develop methodologies and promote their dissemination, the purpose of the meeting was to develop a new vision regarding the future of this program at large. Some 40 researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean are expected to participate.
UPEACE staff paid homage to the UN Victims in Bahgdad 19 August 2004 - San José, Costa Rica. On 19 August, the University for Peace Staff commemorated the first anniversary of the attack on the offices of the United Nations in Baghdad, as requested by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi A. UPEACE publishes a new book 07 August 2004 - San José, Costa Rica. Educar para la Seguridad (Educating for Security) is the new book published by the University for Peace. Dr. Victor Valle, Dean for Academic Administration and Professor of Human Security, was in charge of publishing the book as an outcome of the New Approaches to Security in Central America Programme, which UPEACE has sponsored since 2002, with sponsoriship of the Governments of Italy and Denmark.

UPEACE organized a tree plantation between Ciudad Colon and its main campus 24 July 2004 - San José, Costa Rica. On 24 July, the University for Peace organized an activity to plant trees along the road between Ciudad Colon and its main campus. From 8:30 a.m. until noon, UPEACE staff, family and people from the community participated. The activity ended with a get together at a beautiful view point on the 310 hectares of UPEACE in el Rodeo.

Dr. Gerardo Budowski: 18 April 2004 . In a small office, surrounded by books and shelves, Dr. Gerardo Budowski, Emeritus Professor of the University for Peace, referred to the extensive experience he has gained in 25 years of professional career at UPEACE. His way through this academic institution includes a number of important administrative and academic posts. During this time, although he has had outstanding achievements, he has also had to cope with many difficulties. 2004 will be his last year at UPEACE, but his name will always be remembered and his spirit will live within the hearts and minds of all those who shared with and learned from this great conservationist by conviction.

Conflict prevention and peace-building seminars 6-24 October 2003 - Varzob, Tajikistan. Three week-long training seminars on conflict transformation for some 90 local and sub-regional government officials and civil society leaders, including NGO representatives, academics and community activists were conducted in Varzob, Tajikistan. Participants gained theoretical and practical knowledge of how to recognise and classify conflicts, carry out negotiations and develop mediation skills for preventing conflict.

Series of Three Training Seminars on Collaborative Approach to Conflict Transformation 2-25 October 2003 - Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Collaborative Approach to Conflict Transformation October 2003: Dushanbe, Tajikistan During October 2003, together with UNTOP (UNDPA), UPEACE conducted three week-long pilot "Peace Building Seminars" for ninety (90) diverse local and national Tajik civic leaders, police, journalists, administrators, clerics and officials from opposite parties in the 1992-98 Tajik Conflict. They were taught by three Russian-speaking professionals, together with our own Central Asian trainees observing as future co-trainers. The primary objective of these seminar was to introduce participants to the contemporary state of the field of conflict and peace studies and praxis as well as to enable them to apply the framework and skills in training setting and in practice. Another important focus of these seminars was to elicit cultural approaches to conflict resolution in the Tajik society and to discuss relevance and adjustability of the presented frameworks and skills for the Tajikistan context. As a result of these seminars, a DVD film for training trainers was prepared, and used in the follow-on series of training seminars, e.g., conducted together with UNDPA in the autumn of 2004. Since October 2003, the cohort of twenty leading participants committed and skilled to institutionalize and apply conflict transformation mechanisms and practices in their communities has been engaged in various training events conducted by the UN Mission in different localities of Tajikistan.

Security forces will be trained for improving control of legal trade 2-6 June 2003 - San José, Costa Rica. Approximately 40 security force representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean developed the First Training Course for Trainers on improved control of legal trade and eradication of illicit traffic in firearms and ammunition. This course was held from 2 - 6 June, 2003 to train police, customs and intelligence officials, as well as military force members, to become operational training instructors at the national level.

The Researchers of the Conflict and Collaboration Program Have their First Meeting of the Second Phase 21-27 October 2002 - Pachacamac, Lima, Peru. The First Meeting of Conflict and Collaboration in Natural Resources Management: a small grant program for research in environmental conflicts in Latin America – II Phase, was organized by the Department of Natural Resources of the University for Peace, in coordination with the International Development Research Center of Canada. It took place in Pachacamac, a historical city located 30 km south of Lima, Peru.

UPEACE Celebrates the International Peace Day, September 21st 21 September 2002 - University for Peace, San Jose. Costa Rica. One of the main objectives of the United Nations International Day of Peace is to engage civil society in the peaceful observance of a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, transforming it into a day of global unity. Peace One Day has been fixed for the 21st September. The University for Peace fully supports this initiative and joins in the celebration through various activities held on campus.
Strategies for Networking on Building Peace 21-22 September 2002 - Khartoum, Sudan. A two-day workshop organized by the University for Peace of the United Nations (UPEACE), in collaboration with the Peace Advisory of the Government of Sudan and the University of Khartoum, has been described as "a significant step forward for the UPEACE Africa Programme" by Professor Mary King, Special Advisor to the Rector of UPEACE.

International Conference on the Lessons of the Tajik Peace Process 17-19 June 2002 - Dushanbe, Tajikistan. On 17-19 June 2002 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, the University for Peace, in collaboration with the UN Department of Political Affairs, successfully held an International Conference on the “Lessons Learned from the Tajik Peace Process for Afghanistan.” Fifty participants from fifteen countries (Afghanistan, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Russian Federation, Pakistan, Sweden, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, UK, USA, and Uzbekistan) took part in this Conference, which also included the United Nations, OSCE and European Commission. Among the representatives from International Organizations were the Secretary-General of the OSCE, Jan Kubis, and several of the Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General who served in Tajikistan during the UN mediation of that peace process, which eventually led to the June 1997 Tajik Peace Accords, thus ending the 1992-97 conflict.

2nd Meeting of the Network of Universities for Asia Pacific Peace Building and Conflict Prevention 22-23 May 2002 - Tsinghua University, Beijing. The aim of the meeting was to strengthen the Network of Asia Pacific Universities and Institutions for Conflict Prevention and Peace-Building towards supporting policy-makers both at national and international levels for conflict prevention, peace-building and sustainable development.
First Ladies of the Group of Rio visit the University for Peace 12 April 2002 - University for Peace, San Jose, Costa Rica. On Friday April 12th, during the XVIth Presidential Summit of the Group of Rio, nine First Ladies visited the University for Peace and participated in a private working session where the subjects of family and poverty were discussed using the gender perspective.
Consultative Missions in Africa 10 April-30 October 2002 - Africa. Over the months of April to September, the Africa Programme team from UPEACE has been undertaking Consultative Missions to a number of initially selected African countries (Ethiopia, Liberia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda), to begin to identify the key priorities for action in Education for Peace, with a view to clarifying potential partners for programme development.
Secretary-General of the United Nations visits the University for Peace 15 March 2002 - University for Peace, San José, Costa Rica. The Secretary-General of the United Nation and 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Kofi Annan, arrived in Costa Rica the 15th of March. He used the opportunity to visit the University for Peace and become better acquainted with its progress and future plans.
Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and the University for Peace sign agreement of cooperation 07 March 2002 - UPEACE Campus. San Jose, Costa Rica. The Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University and the University for Peace created by International Agreement endorsed by the UN General Assembly and based in Costa Rica, signed a Memorandum of Agreement to increase their cooperation in line with the missions of both Institutions to promote education for peace, progress and sustainable development. The MoA further serves to promote the exchange of students and faculty for joint course development, teaching and research and to engage in those activities that both Universities consider will enhance global capacity in the area of peace studies.

Arrival of new students for the Dual Masters Degree in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development 21 January 2002 - San José, Costa Rica. The second cohort of 12 students has just started their programme at UPEACE after completing their first semester at American University in Washington DC. The students will stay with UPEACE for the whole year 2003, receiving classes in the spring and fall semesters and carrying out an intership with regional organizations during the summer.
Government of the Netherlands supports the launching of the Africa Programme of UPEACE 15 January 2002 - University for Peace. The University officially launched its Africa Programme under the leadership of Dr. Graça Machel, Chancellor of the University, and Ambassador Mohamed Sahnoun, Member of the Council and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on the Great Lakes region of Africa. The launching of this programme has become possible because of a generous financial contribution from the Government of the Netherlands.

The Third Meeting of the G8 Task Force on Education took place on January 14-15, 2002 at the University for Peace campus. The Task Force on Education was established by G8 Heads of State and Government in Genoa in July 2001 to clarify policies and measures to achieve the goal of universal primary education by 2015 as set out in the Dakar Framework for Action.

UPEACE recieves award for best documentary in the 10th Contest of Cinema and Video of Costa Rica 22-28 November 2001 - San Jose, Costa Rica. The video "History of a Mural", produced by the University for Peace, received the award for the best documentary in the category of childhood and adolescence at the 10th Contest of Cinema and Video of Costa Rica held in San José.
International Course on Analysis and Design of Forest and Natural Resource Policies 22 August 2001 - UPEACE Campus. San Jose, Costa Rica. The Vice-President of the Republic of Costa Rica and Minister of Environment, Elizabeth Odio, gave a lecture about "The Experience of Natural Resources in Costa Rica" to the participants of the International Course on Analysis and Design of Forest and Natural Resource Policies, during it's closing ceremony, on August 22th.
Peace Complex Workshop 22 June 2001 - Washington D.C.. An Expert Workshop on the Peace Complex was held in Washington, D.C. to discuss the research, educational, and networking plans for a proposed multi-functional center at the University for Peace (UPEACE), to be called the Peace Complex.
Central Asian Regional Forum on Conflict Prevention 21-22 June 2001 - Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The UPEACE successfully held a meeting to prepare the first session of its Central Asian Forum for Conflict Prevention and an International Review Conference on the "Lessons Learned from the Tajik Peace Process". Participants took part in this discussion to launch the thirty substantive studies being commissioned for the first Regional Forum.

International Group of Experts Meets at United Nations to Advise the University for Peace 24 March 2001 - New York, USA. On Saturday March 24th, a group of eminent international scholars and experts concluded a two-day meeting at the United Nations which had been called to advise the University for Peace on the development of its new academic program and on the formation of a small Academic Advisory Council to ensure the high-quality and effectiveness of its courses.

Expert Seminar on Human Rights and Peace 8-9 December 2000 - Geneva, Switzerland. The University for Peace convened an Expert Seminar on Human Rights and Peace, held in Geneva on the 8-9 of December 2000. The meeting involved some 20 leading experts from research and academic institutions around the world. Findings from the Expert Seminar will be presented to the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights in preparation of her report to the UN Commission on Human Rights in March 2001.
Honoris Causa Degree conferred on His Majesty the King of Thailand 07 December 2000 - Bangkok, Thailand. The University for Peace conferred upon His Majesty the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej the Degree of Doctor of International Law, Honoris Causa, on the 7th of December 2000. The ceremony coincided with the International Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Universities and Institutions: Collaboration for Conflict Resolution and Peace Building, held on the 6th and 7th of December.
International Meeting of Asia-Pacific Universities and Institutions: Collaborating for Peace 6-7 December 2000 - Bangkok, Thailand. The University for Peace, in conjunction with Mahidol University, Thailand, convened, University Presidents, Vice Chancellors, Rectors, Deans and Administrators from leading Universities and Institutions from 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific. A total of 37 participants and 14 observers attended. The general purpose of this inaugural Meeting, was to a) share experiences on national programmes in peace and conflict resolution and b) to explore modalities and strategies for facilitating collaboration in research, education, teaching and training in issue areas related to conflict prevention and peace building.

The president of the State Duma from the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Mr. Guennadiy N. Seleznev, visited the campus of the UPEACE and took this opportunity to hold a conference on “Foreign and Domestic Russian Policies”.

The 11th Session of the Council of the University for Peace (UPAZ) took place in San Jose, Costa Rica from 21st to 23rd November 1999. This was the second meeting of the Council made up of new Members, appointed in March 1999 by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan in consultation with the then Director General of UNESCO, Dr. Federico Mayor.
