Japanese Peace Mission plants Peace Pole at the UPEACE Recreational Park

29 November 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On 30 November 2004, a group of 20 Japanese volunteers from the World Peace Prayer Society visited the University for Peace to plant a Peace Pole at the UPEACE recreational park. While twenty-five students from the nearly Rodeo School and representatives from Tropical Sierra, a non-governmental organization in Costa Rica and UPEACE staff members attended the ceremony.



Vice President of the Russian Parliament addresses the UPEACE students

24 November 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On 24 November 2004, Dr. Sergey Babunir, Vice President of the Lower House of the Russian Parliament (DUMA), visited the University for Peace and gave to a group of UPEACE students a lecture entitled "Development of the Economic Relations between Russia and Latin America".



UPEACE Students organized the Africa Day

23 November 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

In collaboration with the office of the Dean of African Studies, the UPEACE African Community celebrated a "UPEACE Africa Day" on 5 November 2004. During the two-hour programme, students from various African nations and the Honourable Ambassador of Nigeria to Mexico and Central American projected the different faces of Africa as a continent of diverse cultures. More than 100 people from the University and the neighbouring community participated.

Dr. Edith Natukunda-Togboa : A challenging Educationalist

As Dean of African Studies and Director of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies, Dr. Edith Natukunda has been intimately involved with the conception, development and implementation of the Africa Programme of the University for Peace. Prior to her move to UPEACE headquarters, she served as Resident Advisor to the Rector of UPEACE in Uganda.



Distance Learning Course on the Role of the Media in the Rwanda Genocide

08 November 2004 .

In this distance learning course you will study the different facets of the media role in the genocide in detail. You will see how easily the concept of free speech and free press in a local situation can be perverted for foul ends. We will ask how this dilemma could be resolved. We will explore the problem of inadequate or even distorted international coverage of crises and conflicts in areas poorly understood by Western journalists. We will consider whether this unfortunate situation can be improved in the future.

Pre-electoral Conflict Prevention Seminar October 2004: Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan

Twenty representatives of the Kyrgyz government together with judges, journalists, municipal leaders and academics took part in a Pre-electoral Conflict Prevention Seminar in Kyrgyzstan. This initiative was organised in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Political Affairs (UNDPA) and the UN Mission in Bishkek. The main focus of this practitioners seminar was to provide a format for analysing the major issues related to conflict prevention and transformation prior and during election period and to enable the participants to timely recognise, map and address conflict situation. As an immediate outcome of the seminar, the "code of conduct" for various players during the election period was developed, based both on international and Kyrgyz experience and context. The seminar outline became a part of CAP training package, which can be offered both as a case study for academic teaching and in a training format for civil society representatives and the staff of international organisations involved in election process.



UPEACE students organized a Culture for Peace Festival 2004

This year's first annual Cultures of Peace Festival brought together over 100 people in Macondo, a community launch located in Ciudad Colón on Thursday 20th October 2004. The cultural Showcase included performance art, dances, songs, poems and tales from across the world.



Amr Abdalla: New Dean for Academic Programmes

On 23 August 2004, Dr. Amr Abdalla, Professor and Dean for Academic Programmes, joined the family of the UN affiliated University for Peace. In his capacity as the new Dean, Dr. Abdalla will ensure that all UPEACE academic courses and activities are of the highest quality and that they contribute to the growth of the University as a leader in the field of peace building and conflict resolution education and practice.



UPEACE celebrates the UN International Day of Peace

Yesterday, the University for Peace joined with United Nations staff members in 43 countries around the world in celebrating the UN International Day of Peace. The activity took place at the University for Peace campus and was attended by the students and personnel of the University.



Final Meeting of the Program on Conflict and Collaboration in Natural Resource Management in Latin America and the Caribbean (CyC)

10 September 2004 - Bogotá, Colombia.

The final meeting of the Program on Conflict and Collaboration in Natural Resource Management in Latin America and the Caribbean (CyC) was held in Bogotá, Colombia, between August 30 and September 11, 2004. Aimed at sharing the outcome of phase 2, identifying the main lessons learned during phases 1 and 2, and establishing a set of principles in order to prepare publications with case studies, develop methodologies and promote their dissemination, the purpose of the meeting was to develop a new vision regarding the future of this program at large. Some 40 researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean are expected to participate.



UPEACE staff paid homage to the UN Victims in Bahgdad

19 August 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On 19 August, the University for Peace Staff commemorated the first anniversary of the attack on the offices of the United Nations in Baghdad, as requested by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi A. Annan. With UPEACE staff members assembled, the activity began at 11:00 a.m. and was carried out in campus where the United Nations and UPEACE flags wave together.



UPEACE publishes a new book

07 August 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

Educar para la Seguridad (Educating for Security) is the new book published by the University for Peace. Dr. Victor Valle, Dean for Academic Administration and Professor of Human Security, was in charge of publishing the book as an outcome of the New Approaches to Security in Central America Programme, which UPEACE has sponsored since 2002, with sponsoriship of the Governments of Italy and Denmark.



The new UPEACE Vice Rector: A multicultural, multifaceted man

On July 9, 2004 Mr. Georges Tsaï took on his new position as Vice Rector, bringing to UPEACE more than 34 years of relevant multidisciplinary experience, practical knowledge and multicultural expertise. His role will be crucial to further expand the Universitys current programmes and gain greater visibility at the international level



Faculty and Staff Development Seminar on Gender and Peacebuilding

The Faculty and Staff Development Seminar on Gender and Peacebuilding, held in Kitwe, Zambia from the 26th to 30th of July 2004, was jointly organized by the UPEACE Africa Programme and the Department of Gender and Peace Studies, in collaboration with the Dag Hammarskjöld Centre for Peace, Good Governance, and Human Rights of the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation (MEF).



UPEACE organized a tree plantation between Ciudad Colon and its main campus

24 July 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On 24 July, the University for Peace organized an activity to plant trees along the road between Ciudad Colon and its main campus. From 8:30 a.m. until noon, UPEACE staff, family and people from the community participated. The activity ended with a get together at a beautiful view point on the 310 hectares of UPEACE in el Rodeo.



The first of two Faculty and Staff Development Seminars in Gender and Peace Building to take place in Zambia from 26-30 July

20 July 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

As a joint collaboration between the UPEACE Department of Gender and Peace Studies, UPEACE Africa and the UPEACE Centre for Education and Information Technologies, the first of a series of Faculty and Staff Development Seminars in Gender and Peace Building will take place in Kitwe, Zambia, 26 - 30 July 2004. . This four-day seminar will be hosted by the Dag Hammarskjöld Center for Peace, Good Governance and Human Rights of the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation in Zambia.



New Ambassador of Nigeria visits UPEACE

19 July 2004 - San José, Costa Rica .

On 15 July 2004, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Dr. Iyorwuese Hagher, paid a visit to the University for Peace and became better acquainted with its activities and future plans. Residing in Mexico, Dr. Hagher is the newly appointed Ambassador of Nigeria for Costa Rica,.



New Book titled: Education for a Culture of Social and Ecological Peace

08 July 2004 .

"An Integral Model of Peace Education", by Dr. Abelardo Brenes Castro, UPEACE faculty member, will be soon published as one of the chapters in the book, Education for a Culture of Social and Ecological Peace, to be released in August 2004. The book is edited by Anita L. Wenden and published by Suny Press, a member of the Association of American University Presses.

Originally from the Netherlands and a career diplomat, Ambassador Frans van Haren expressed sadness about leaving Costa Rica and the University for Peace where he has served for three years as Vice-Rector for Institutional Affairs. Playing a key role in the process of restructuring and consolidating the university, his work at UPEACE has been accompanied by both successes and challenges, as well as difficult moments and sacrifice. His extensive experience and knowledge have enabled him to contribute to piecing together a puzzle made up of ideas and projections that has transformed UPEACE into a global institution, recognized for academic excellence.



UPEACE/Africa programme hosts two meetings in Butare, Rwanda to discuss new initiatives in the Great Lakes Region

"News for Peace""initiative in Rwanda (28 - 29 June 2004. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the development of a new project initiative entitled "News for Peace", and to agree on its strategy and implementation plan.

Regional Media for Peace Programme in the Great Lakes Region (30 June - 1 July 2004). During the second meeting participants discussed the setting up, on a short, medium and long-term period, of a regional "Media for Peace" programme in the Great Lakes Region.



UPEACE Celebrates its Commencement 2004

25 June 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On 25 June 2004, the University for Peace conferred graduate degrees upon 69 graduates from 35 countries on five continents. Collectively, they represent a new generation of peace builders. The students received one of the following graduate degrees: Master of Arts in Gender and Peace Building, Master of Arts in International Law and Human Rights, Master of Arts in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes, Master in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development and a Doctoral Degree in Communications and Peace.



UPEACE's Newest Academic Appointment

The University for Peace today welcomes the arrival of Dr. Edith Natukunda-Togboa amongst the faculty of the University, as she takes up her role as Dean of African Studies and Director of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies.

New Human Rights Educational Project

Rector Martin Lees: A True Peace Warrior

With the tenacity and courage of a soldier under fire, Martin Lees copes every day with the threats posed to peace worldwide. Since 2001, this British citizen has contributed his strength and perseverance to the success and progress made by the UN affiliated University for Peace. Together with a group of well-known men and women, Mr Lees has successfully contributed to the building of a renovated foundation for the university as well as expansion of its academic programmes around the globe.

Dr. Gerardo Budowski:

18 April 2004 .

In a small office, surrounded by books and shelves, Dr. Gerardo Budowski, Emeritus Professor of the University for Peace, referred to the extensive experience he has gained in 25 years of professional career at UPEACE. His way through this academic institution includes a number of important administrative and academic posts. During this time, although he has had outstanding achievements, he has also had to cope with many difficulties. 2004 will be his last year at UPEACE, but his name will always be remembered and his spirit will live within the hearts and minds of all those who shared with and learned from this great conservationist by conviction.



Makeda Tsegaye: "This is exactly what I wanted to do"

Located in her small cozy cabin only five minutes away from the UPEACE campus, Makeda Tsegaye, a student from Ethiopia enrolled in the University for Peace Masters programme in International Peace Studies, referred to the enriching experience she has gained during the past eight months.

A UPEACE Africa Programme delegation undertook a planning mission to Zambia on 16 March 2004 and held a two day coordination meeting in preparation of a forthcoming Faculty and Staff Development Seminar on Gender and Peacebuilding . The delegation met with representatives of the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation (MEF) and the Dag Hammarskjöld Peace Centre for Peace, Good Governance and Human Rights in Kitwe, Zambia , partners of the Africa Programme .



Women: true peacemakers

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion celebrated by women's groups around the world. Women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistics, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day that is commemorated at the United Nations and has been designated in many countries as a national holiday. It is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.



Curriculum Development Workshop on Peace and Conflict Resolution for the Western African Region

The third UPEACE Curriculum Development Workshop for the Western African region was held in Abuja, Nigeria from the 8th to 12th of March, 2004, co-hosted with and coordinated by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria (NUC) and the University of Jos, Nigeria.



Latin America alert to the illicit traffic of firearms

8-19 March 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

Aware of the urgent need to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, 32 officers from the law enforcement community in Latin America and the Caribbean are participating in a two-week investigative training course related to the commercial trade of and illicit trafficking in firearms and ammunition, at the main campus in Costa Rica of the United Nations mandated University for Peace (UPEACE).



Mr. Jaime Montalvo, Former Rector, visits UPEACE

Mr. Montalvo, current President of the Economic and Social Council (ESC) of Spain and former Rector of the University for Peace (1989-1994), made a short visit on 1 March to UPEACE and its students.



UPEACE hosts an Intensive Course on New Forms of Security

1-5 March 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On March 1-5, the University for Peace whose headquarters is located in Costa Rica, will conduct an intensive course on New Forms of Security. On this occasion, well-known figures from both the Government of Costa Rica and the University for Peace will gather to participate in this course. Its main goal is to contribute to education and training in the Central American region, aimed at strengthening and delving into security in the context of democracy.



Africa Programme seeks Director to be based in its Addis Ababa Office

1 March-30 April 2004 .

The United Nations affiliated University for Peace welcomes applications for the position of Director of its Africa Programme. The director will be based in the Addis Ababa office of UPEACE (once launched in 2004), and will be part of a unique university that functions as a global knowledge network, created by a General Assembly resolution of the United Nations two decades ago.



Master's Degree Students were today presented with Certificates

18 February 2004 - San José, Costa Rica.

On 18 February 2004, students in the Master's Degree Programme in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes were presented with Certificates granted by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the University for Peace for their participation in the Course on International Humanitarian Law.



Intensive Course on New Approaches to Security in Guatemala

16-20 February 2004 - Guatemala.

On 16-20 February 2004, Dr. Victor Valle, University for Peace Professor of Human Security and Dean for Academic Administration, conducted an intensive course in Guatemala on "New Approaches to Security in Central America".



Dean Louis Goodman from American University lectured at UPEACE

In the afternoon of 13 February, Professor Louis Goodman from American University addressed the Upeace students and staff with a lecture on "Civil-Military Relations and Democracy in Latin America".
