Memorandum of Agreement signed between UPEACE and Femmes Africa Solidarité 02 November 2005 - Geneva, Switzerland. Julia Marton-Lefevre, Rector of the University for Peace (UPEACE), and Bineta Diop, Executive Director of Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS), have today signed a Memorandum of Agreement to partner in the process of peace education and in facilitating the establishment of a knowledge network on peace education in the African region.

Course on Governance, International Law, and Human Rights 19 October 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. From 20 September to 7 October, Hassan El Menyawi, one of the United Nations-mandated University for Peace's professors, has been teaching a course called "Governance, International Law, and Human Rights." It is a course designed for students studying in the departments of International Peace and Conflict Studies, Peace Education, and Environmental Security and Peace. The course was also open to students from the Natural Resources Department, and two students from that department enrolled.

Celebrating Peaceful Multi-cultural living with the Festival de las Flores de la Diaspora Africana 23 September 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. Tropically joyous melodies, golden, glittering, flowing robes and Caribbean spicy food characterised last Fridays Cultural Show at the Museo Nacional in San Jose. The show, organised as a promotional activity of the Africa and Diaspora artistic exhibition, brought together a thunderous audience of over 150 UPEACE staff, students and well-wishers from the Costa Rican community to celebrate the Festival de las Flores de la Diaspora Africana.

The Peace Builders series was launched by the Daily Nation in Nairobi, in collaboration with the University for Peace, on 21 September 2005 designated by the United Nations as International Day of Peace. The Daily Nation is East Africas largest selling newspaper read on a daily basis by around one million people. It circulates throughout the East Africa region.

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, represented by Foreign Affairs State Minister, Dr. Tekeda Alemu and the University for Peace, represented by Rector Julia Marton-Lefèvre have signed a host agreement on Thursday, 1 September 2005 regarding the office of the university in Addis Ababa.

Rector Julia Marton-Lefèvre gave a warm welcome to more than 100 students from 40 countries enrolled in 7 Masters Programmes. Short Course on Justice, Human Rights and Peace and a Sensitisation Workshop on Leadership Development 22-27 August 2005 - Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In accordance with the UPEACE Africa Programme'x aim to develop and increase capacity in the teaching of conflict and peace studies in Africa, a short course on justice, human rights and peace was organized in Addis Ababa from 22 to 26 August 2005. The short course was hosted by Addis Ababa University and thirty participants from seventeen African countries have attended the course.

Workshop in Escuela Finca la Caja, la Carpio 03 August 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. A workshop was facilitated by the M.A. Programme in Peace Education, of UPEACE, on August 3, 2005. It is the first of a series of seven workshops that will be offered this year to the staff of the school. The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Education, which consider it a priority activity within a new policy of Integral Prevention and Human Development that the Ministrys Regional Directorate of San José is developing within the "Education for All Framework".

UPEACE celebrates its Commencement 2005 24 June 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 24 June 2005, the University for Peace conferred graduate degrees upon 82 students from 36 countries. The ceremony was held at the UPEACE campus, located in Ciudad Colón, Costa Rica.
Each graduate received one of the following six Master's degrees: Gender and Peace Building, International Law and Human Rights, International Law and the Settlement of Disputes, Natural Resources and Sustainable Development, International Peace Studies and Peace Education.
78 Children celebrated the International Tree Day at the UPEACE campus 15 June 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 15 June 2005, 78 children from the Santa Mónica School in Costa Rica visited the campus of the University for Peace, located in Ciudad Colón, to celebrate International Tree Day. The children arrived at 9:00 a.m., along with teachers and various relatives who came to support their children for the activity.
UPEACE held two important annual Meetings: The Second Meeting of the Strategic Planning Group and the Third Session of the International Academic Council 20 May 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. The UPEACE headquarters was the host for the "Second Strategic Planning Meeting that took place on 16 17 May 2005, with the participation of 25 staff members from Costa Rica and regional offices. The theme of this second edition of SPG was Managing a Global Institution", which reflects the fact that UPEACE is developing fast and expanding operations in various parts of the world.
UPEACE celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations 03 May 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 22 April 2005, the University for Peace hosted a celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations. The organization "A World Without Armies" (AWWA) prepared a special programme that included poetry, art, music and film.

Rector Martin Lees leaves his position as Rector but remains as Rector Emeritus and Special Advisor for the University for Peace 27 April 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. Since 2001, this British citizen has contributed his strength and perseverance to the success of the University for Peace. During his five years as Rector of UPEACE he built a renovated foundation for the University as well as expansion of its academic programmes around the world. Now on 1 May 2005, Mr. Martin Lees says goodbye to his position of Rector and welcomes Mrs. Julia Marton-Lefèvre.
Course Development and Training Seminar on Regional Water Resources and Peacebuilding 22-26 April 2005 - Almaty, Kazakhstan. Regional Water Resources and Peacebuilding, April 2005: Almaty, Kazakhstan UPEACE Course Development and Training Seminar on Regional Water Resources and Peacebuilding in Almaty was attended by forty-five participants from various countries such as Afghanistan, Canada, Finland, Kazazkhstan, Kyrgyztan, Russia, Sweden, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, United Kingdom, United States and Uzbekistan. This course focused on worldwide experience in preventing conflict though regional management of water resources, while at the same time integrating experience from Central Asia itself. Such a course is of great relevance to all Central Asian countries and serves the dual purpose of training experts and professors already engaged in research and policy-making in this sensitive area of intra-regional relations. As a result of this seminar, the CAP is developing a multi-media package and a compendium of material, which will serve both teaching and training modules both for use in the universities in the region as well as throughout UPEACEs worldwide teaching network.
Glimpsing Human Rights Eternity: Makau Mutua at UPEACE 07 April 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On February 25, the director of the Human Rights Center at Buffalo Law School of the State University of New York (SUNY), professor and post-colonial scholar Makau Mutua made a presentation to the students and faculty of UPEACE. Largely based on his book Human Rights: A Political and Cultural Critique, his presentation brought discernible joy and excitement to the audience.
UPEACE celebrates the Cultural Festival 2005 17 March 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. On 17 March 2005, the University for Peace carried out its second annual cultural festival. "Cultural Festival 2005: Expressing Freedom" took place on the University for Peace campus with the participation of approximately 100 students, staff and families from the surrounding community.
UPEACE organized the Workshop: Conflict Resolution and Peace-building 17 March 2005 - University of Costa Rica (UCR), San Jose, Costa Rica. For the first time in the history of its revitalization, UPEACE has organized an academic event in collaboration with a Costa Rican counterpart. The workshop, entitled "Conflict Resolution and Peace-building" is one of the many efforts that the University is making to establish academic links at national level and to strengthen its relationship with the Costa Rican community.
UPEACE student wins prize for Best Oral Presentation in National Round of Jessup Competition 03 March 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. Last month, UPEACE students from the International Law Programme participated in the national round of the 2005 Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition in San José, Costa Rica. The competition, which took place on Feb. 7, pitted the UPEACE team against a team of students from the University of Costa Rica, and although the victory went to UCR, the judges considered it a very close call.

The third annual University for Peace Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC), a short course offered by the UN mandated took place at the headquarters of the University for Peace in Costa Rica from 17 to 19 February 2005.
Regional Master's Media for Peace Programme in the Great Lakes Region 22-26 February 2005 - Bujumbura, Burundi. Following the first meeting of the Regional MA Media for Peace which took place in June/July 2003 in Butare (Rwanda), UPEACE organised a follow up consultative meeting on the subject, in Bujumbura (Burundi). The meeting brought together media and communication professionals from UPEACE partner universities in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Al Día recognizes UPEACE Peace Park 11 February 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. In its 26 January 2005 issue, Al Día, one of Costa Ricas leading newspapers, recognized the University for Peace Park as one of the most beautiful and most frequently visited parks. Adjoining the University for Peace main campus in San José 45 minutes by road from downtown San José, the Park contains a rich biodiversity and includes three small lakes, several huts, various trails, a lookout point, a soccer field and a childrens playground.
Celebrating Human Rights Day: Moving from Legal Texts to Heroes 13 January 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. The faculty, students, and staff of the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE) celebrated Human Rights Day on 10 December , 2004. Students, faculty, and staff began the day, remembering the significance of Human Rights Day as the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is regarded as a day of hope that arose from the ashes of the atrocities of the Second World War and the Holocaust. Several administrators and faculty members paid homage to those who believe in a possible future in which the nation-states of the world would respect human rights in their relations with other nations and with their own citizens.
UPEACE President Emeritus awarded with an Honorary Degree 04 January 2005 - Alabama. On 11 December 2004, Dr. Rodrigo Carazo, President Emeritus and founder of the University for Peace, received an honorary degree from the University of South Alabama during its fall commencement 2004. The ceremony took place at the USA Mitchell Center where Carazo addressed nearly 1,400 students.
New Human Rights Publications 01 January 2005 - San José, Costa Rica. The University for Peace is very pleased to present the publications of the Human Rights Education Project carried out with funding from the Government of the Netherlands. The Human Rights Education Project has produced three books and a CD-ROM.
