Africa's newsmedia: the vision, the need and the responsibility: 7-9 August 2006 - Nairobi, Kenia. Journalists and broadcasters from over 25 African countries will be attending this UPEACE conference that will take place in Nairobi on 7-9 August 2006. The main issue that will be discussed is the future of Africa's newsmedia. The conference is being organised in partnership with the Nation Media Group, publishers of the largest selling newspaper in Eastern Africa, the Daily Nation.

UPEACE and University of Winnipeg Summer Peacebuilding Institute 19 June 2006-23 June 2008 - Winnepeg, Manitoba. UPEACE Professor Victoria Fontan taught as part of a team of professors in the inaugural summer peacebuilding institute of UPEACE and the University of Winnipeg. The institute focussed on "Multiethnic Cities and Peacebuilding:Linking the Global and the Local" and was attended enthusiastically by both tertiary students and community practitioners.
Training of Trainers Seminar on "Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding" 13-16 June 2006 - Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Following the course development seminar on "Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding" held in Dushanbe in February 2006, a training of trainers seminar took place during 13-16 June 2006 as the next important step of a Norway-funded project. The aim of the seminar was to finalize the course curricula developed during the first seminar in February, to train educators, trainers and civil society representatives on using the academic and training models and to discuss with participants how to best apply various teaching resources for practical teaching and training. The specific educational objective of the course on Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding consists of developing and spreading concepts and skills for dealing with conflicts through alternative mechanisms for dispute resolution which spring from a combination of authentic Islamic knowledge and traditions, and contemporary academic and practical resources in the field of peace and conflict studies.

Earth Charter Delegates Meet with President-Elect Oscar Arias 06 April 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. Delegates from Earth Charter International and the University for Peace met yesterday with President-Elect Oscar Arias of Costa Rica to discuss areas of potential collaboration during Mr. Arias' term of office. Mr. Arias, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was recently re-elected after years away from political office, will be inaugurated on 8 May 2006. The Costa Rican government has traditionally been a strong supporter of the Earth Charter in international fora, such as the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2004 World Congress of the IUCN.
Short Course on Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution (CPMR) 3-7 April 2006 - Pretoria, South Africa. In accordance with one of the aims of UPEACE to develop and increase capacity in the teaching of conflict and peace studies in Africa, the UPEACE Africa Programme has recently concluded a short course on Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution. The course was held in Pretoria from 3 to 7 April 2006 with participants form 16 African countries.
Advanced Studies in Environmental Diplomacy 1 April-31 May 2006 - Geneva, Switzerland. Admission process is now open for the certificate course of advanced studies in Environmental Diplomacy. This course comprises 10 modules, partly given in an intensive two-week course period in Geneva during 26 August-10 September 2006, preceded by a period of distance learning in July-August 2006, and followed by preparation of a thesis. This course is a joint effort of the United Nations Environment Programme, the University of Geneva, UNITAR and University for Peace. Vera Narodnitzkaia, Director of the Central Asia Programme, represented UPEACE at this partnership and co-ordinated the development of UPEACE's module. Another module coordinator, Tom Deligiannis, Assistant Professor of UPEACE, will teach the module on Environmental Diplomacy during the face-to-face teaching session in Geneva.
UPEACE students stage Model United Nations Conference 2006 16 March 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. The fourth annual University for Peace Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC 2006) is taking place at the headquarters of the University for Peace in San José, Costa Rica. One hundred and eighty participants are attending UPMUNC 2006, including UPEACE students and staff, and students from other prestigious national and international Universities. The event wraps up on 18 March 2006.
Human Rights Educational Project 13 March 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. During her recent stay at the University as Visiting Professor in the Department of International Law and Human Rights, Dr. Magdalena Sepulveda, former Co-Director of the Department, discussed plans for the continuation and enhancement of the Department's Human Rights Educational Project (HREP).
International Committee of the Red Cross and the University for Peace signed the II Memorandum of Agreement 10 March 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. On Friday, 10 March 2006, Messrs. Daniel Glinz, Deputy Regional Delegate of the ICRC, and Georges Tsaï, Vice Rector of UPEACE, signed the II Memorandum of Agreement between the International Committee of the Red Cross and the University for Peace. Through this MOA the ICRC will continue supporting education on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and implementing the principles and norms of this field of law in order to apply the new objectives defined by ICRC in all agreements to be signed with universities and higher-education institutions.
International Women' s Day 08 March 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. March 8th is International Women's Day and will be celebrated at UPEACE by a student-run production of Eve Ensler's famous international play "The Vagina Monologues." Students Elisa Audo, Junyke Zulu and Alex MBallo from the MA in Gender and Peace Building are coordinating the activity with the support of twenty-five students who are also part of the production. The activity will take place in the Council Room from 5 to 7pm.
UPEACE Professor attended a workshop in Turkey 6-8 March 2006 - Istanbul, Turkey. From 6-8 March 2006, professor Jennifer Hazen attended a workshop on "Building National Capacities for Conflict Prevention and Transformation". The workshop was held in Istanbul, Turkey, and was hosted jointly by the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Department of Political Affairs. The workshop, attended by nearly 100 participants, focused on understanding new and emerging approaches to conflict prevention and conflict transformation, sharing national experiences of UN country teams, and developing concrete practical strategies for furthering the efforts of the UN in areas of building social cohesion and promoting good governance, development, and peacebuilding.
Dean for Latin America and the Caribbean Programme and UPEACE team participate in a workshop in Sao Paulo, Brazil 6-10 March 2006 - Sao Paulo, Brazil. A UPEACE mission was in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 6 through 10 of March 2006. The team composed of Tatiana Benavides, Carlos García, Betty Mc Dermot and Victor Valle- facilitated a strategic planning workshop for the recently created Open University for Environment and Culture of Peace, UMAPAZ in the Portuguese acronym.
UN peace-building institution to take root in Kingdom 05 March 2006 - Amman, Jordan. AMMAN (JT) A delegation from the UN-affiliated University of Peace (UPEACE) visited the Kingdom last week to take practical steps towards the establishment of a regional centre for peace-building and conflict resolution in partnership with UPEACE. During the three-day visit, UPEACE Rector Julia Marton-Lefevre and Dean for Academic Programmes Amr Abdalla met with representatives from the Royal Court and senior officials including Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khalid Touqan and Commandant of the Royal Jordanian National Defence College Maj. Gen. Mohammed Fahed Allaf.

On 22 February 2006, the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Students attended its San José Environmental Seminar #3 at the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). This organization is a non-profit consortium that has grown to include 63 universities and research institutions from the United States, Latin America and Australia
Peace Education students attended the presentation of "State of the Nation Report" 21 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. On Tuesday, February 21st, Peace Education students Nick (U.S.A), Brandon (U.S.A), Geoff (Canada), Koe (Japan), Zahid (Pakistan), Dody (Indonesia) and Azad (Bangladesh) participated in a public presentation, with their programme director, Prof. Abelardo Brenes Ph.D., of the State of the Nation Report on Education in Costa Rica. Every year since 1995, the four Costa Rican public universities have jointly published a report on the State of the Nation in Sustainable Human Development, in an effort to provide public access to vital trends in Costa Rican development. It serves as a kind of social, economic, environmental, and political mirror for the society and is influential in governmental policy-making

On 14 February 2006, students from the MA in Gender and Peace Building, visited the San Rafael Hospital of Alajuela as part of the course, "A Gender Analysis of the Environment and Sustainable Development". Visiting professors Vivienne Solís Rivera, Ivannia Ayales and Patricia Madrigal, will be teaching this course until 21 February.

During 20-23 February 2006 a course development seminar on "Religious Identity, Islam and Peacebuilding" was held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan as a first event of a Norway-funded project. The seminar was led by UPEACE Professors Amr Abdalla, Dean for Academic Studies, and Mahmoud Hamid, Department of Environmental Security.

On 17 February 2006, five students from the MA Programmes in International Law participated in the National Round of the 2006 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.

From 15-16 February 2006, Rector Julia Marton-Lefèvre, Dr Amr Abdalla, Dean for Academic Programmes and Dr. Jean-Bosco Butera, Director of the Africa Programme, attended an invitation by Mrs. Mubarak to the opening of the Peace Studies Institute at the Alexandria Library.

The students will visit all the organizations in Costa Rica that are dealing with environmental issues.

Earth Charter Education Center Training in Stockholm 12-15 February 2006 - Sweden. What do a compass, an amoeba, a pyramid, and the stratosphere have in common? The staff of the Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development at UPEACE were wondering the very same thing before our recent training seminar in Sweden from Feb. 12 -15. They are in fact the names of tools and methods for working towards sustainability and include indicators for sustainability (Compass), a methodology for building consensus on sustainable development planning (Pyramid), strategies for diffusing change (Amoeba) and strategic analysis tools (StrateSphere).
Director of the Department of Human Rights and Social Affairs with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the UPEACE campus 09 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica . Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Director of the Department of Human Rights and Social Affairs with the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the UPEACE campus on 9 February 2006. She offered a lecture focusing on the initiative led by Brazil, in partnership with France, Chile, Spain, Germany and Algeria, to establish the International "Action against Hunger and Poverty". The lecture took place from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm, Council Room. Students and staff attended.
New Dean for Latin America and the Caribbean attend International Seminar in Mexico 9-10 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. From 9-10 February 2006, our new Dean for Latin America and the Caribbean, Dr. Victor Valle, attended an international seminar on human security, which was convened by the the government of Mexico and sponsored by government of Japan. The activity took place at the main building of the Mexican Foreign Ministry and lasted two days.
New Publication: UN Peacekeeping and Preventive Diplomacy 08 February 2006 - UPEACE, Costa Rica. By publishing this book, the Central Asia Programme continues its research on the Tajik Peace Process.
UPEACE professors teach an opening module in Sri Lanka 07 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. From 7-11 February 2006, professors Amr Abdalla and Jennifer Hazen taught the opening module of the Diploma in Conflict Resolution course in Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies in Colombo. This module, attended by 41 participants, provided participants with an introduction to the theories and practice of conflict resolution. This module acts as the foundation for the remainder of the program. The participants came from a wide range of backgrounds, including the military, the government, and local and international NGOs. Participants actively engaged in the course through group discussions, simulations, and group presentations.
UPEACE Students participated as observers at the Costa Rican presidential elections 05 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. On 5 February 2006, International Peace Studies students Paul Rushton, Benjamin Hess, Rachel Kutzley, Nicolas Eliades and Joseph Brothers were accepted as members of the Electoral Observers International Mission to the Costa Rican elections.
Asia Fest 2006 01 February 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. On 1 February 2006, the UPEACE Asian students celebrated the diversity of Asia and Asian Diaspora through various activities that started at 1:00 pm with a movie, followed by a discussion in the audiovisual room.

On our Web page the Student/Alumni section has been re-designed to include full profiles (with photos, brief up-dated bios and email addresses) of each of our present students, our alumni, and those students whose degrees are pending completion of their thesis. It also provides statistics about them. These will be up-dated regularly.

UPEACE Institute held successfully 11 January 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. Last week, a total of 125 students and participants started the UPEACE INSTITUTE with a 2-day skills building workshop on Cross-Cultural Communication and Ethical Decision Making. The workshop was conducted by experienced, world-renowned trainers from LEAD International: Gillian Martin-Mehers and Gitanjali Bedi. In a highly interactive, fun environment, students and participants from over 40 countries shared and learned cultural experiences and pondered related questions of ethics and decision making.
Welcome students from Dual Masters Degree in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development 02 January 2006 - San José, Costa Rica. On 2 January 2006, 25 students from the Dual Masters in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development arrived at UPEACE to conclude their studies. This new group of students had their orientation from 4-6 January at the UPEACE campus and received an introduction to Costa Rica, its history, environment and development, as well as an introduction to the academic life at UPEACE and administrative issues.
