UPEACE Rainbows

Johannesburg, August 2006

Executions in Iran: Activists Mark Anniversary of Gay Executions with a Call for Human Rights
Brussels, July 2006.

The goals of our organization are:

  • to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students, staff and faculty who work and study at UPEACE;
  • to ensure that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender students, staff and faculty who come to the school in the future will be well-received; and
  • to move beyond tolerance toward respect and support.

DProf. Anouk Guiné (GPBE) and Prof. Juan Amaya Castro (DIL) are Student Counsellors for all LGBT-related matters. Students are invited to contact them should they have any question and/or concern that they would like to express. Any of these contacts shall be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

During the 2005-2006 school year, there were about 15-25 active members of our group, including students, staff and faculty. We met every Wednesday afternoon in an informal lunch meeting in the cafeteria. We gathered under a rainbow flag, a symbol of gay pride worldwide, which shows the beauty of diversity. This symbol is particularly fitting at UPEACE, where we come to school wearing different styles, speaking several languages, practicing various faith traditions and eating different foods. Some of us also have different life experiences, identities and sexual orientations. The UPEACE Rainbows acknowledge and celebrate this.

We developed and maintained an intentional community, through our weekly gatherings and occasional outings together, and we also offered educational opportunities by coordinating on-campus events and activities. For example, we held an international LGBT film festival and we created a display that honored LGBT communities across the world.

With full awareness that some people may have never heard these terms before, we offer the following definitions:

Lesbian: a woman who is emotionally, physically, or sexually attracted to or active with other women

Gay: a man who is emotionally, physically, or sexually attracted to or active with other men

Bisexual: a person who is attracted to or active with both sexes

Transgender: a person who acts, feels, thinks or looks like someone from the opposite sex

 Ally: an ally is a friend to the LGBT community. She or he is not necessarily L or G or B or T, but supports the rights of all people to exist and thrive with security.

All UPEACE community members, regardless of their sexual orientation, are invited to participate in our group! The UPEACE Rainbows invite and welcome everyone!
