UPMUNC Objectives

University for Peace expects UPMUNC to be a pace setting simulation, as it will allow participants to combine multiculturalism, negotiation skills and global networking. For young scholars and practitioners of world peace advocacy, this highly interactive activity will prove to be of critical importance. It's objectives include:

  • Establish a one-of-a-kind mock UN summit that parallels UPEACE’s mandate in accordance with the United Nations
  • Provide participants with an interactive environment that allows them to learn about the structure, procedure and actors of the UN system through a truly international perspective.
  • Offer participants training in practical interdisciplinary thinking and cooperation
  • Build a new UN affiliated network with participating universities and organizations
  • Work toward the growth and development of international peace education.

Human Rights Council: The Use of Torture in Conflict Situations
UPMUNC’s Human Rights Council will be the largest Committee within the conference in order to reflect the reality of the debates present in the United Nations system, as it is compromised by a variety of States representing regional balance. The topic addressed by the delegations will be that of the use of torture in conflict situations, focused on a couple of case studies.

    Peacebuilding Commission: Post-Conflict Afghanistan
UPMUNC 2008 is pleased to include the recently created Peacebuilding Commission in its committees. Peace as a concept cannot be defined as just the stopping/ending of conflict, but also as building conditions to prevent conflict from arising again. Henceforth, taking into account the goals of the Commission, which include the creation of integrated strategies for post-conflict recovery, the Commission will discuss the situation of post-conflict Afghanistan. Focus will be set on reconstruction, institution-building and sustainable development. As the second largest committee of UPMUNC, the composition will reflect the actual UN Peacebuilding Commission, incorporating members of the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and a variety of other UN members that provide funding, military aid, and those that add regional balance to the Commission.

Apart from the traditional delegations representing Member States of the United Nations, positions will be open for representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations, Media and Communications Officers, and observers.
