UPMUNC Objectives
University for Peace expects UPMUNC to be a pace setting simulation, as it will allow participants to combine multiculturalism, negotiation skills and global networking. For young scholars and practitioners of world peace advocacy, this highly interactive activity will prove to be of critical importance. It's objectives include:
- Establish a one-of-a-kind mock UN summit that parallels UPEACE’s mandate in accordance with the United Nations
- Provide participants with an interactive environment that allows them to learn about the structure, procedure and actors of the UN system through a truly international perspective.
- Offer participants training in practical interdisciplinary thinking and cooperation
- Build a new UN affiliated network with participating universities and organizations
- Work toward the growth and development of international peace education.
Date: UPMUNC will take place on the 22nd-24th February 2007
Venue: University for Peace Headquarters, San José, Costa Rica.
Size: 250 participants
Simulated topic and Participating Bodies
Topic: Humanitarian Crisis and International Response: Toward a Sustainable Peace in Darfur
Bodies: Participants will be divided into the following bodies and working groups:
- Security Council, which will discuss political and military aspects of the crisis. It will be comprised of the current SC members, as well as potential guest countries, invited by the SC.
Government of Sudan and Rebel Groups, which will have to negotiate an integral solution to the conflict, as well as respond to unexpected events bound to happen during the Conference. Members of this groups include: Government of National Unity, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, and the Justice and Equality Movement.
Humanitarian Intervention/Assistance Workgroup, which will discuss the possibility of military intervention, under a UN mandate, an African Union mandate or unilaterally. Its members include Security Council members, other African states, UN organizations such as UNHCR and UNIFEM, international organizations such as Amnesty International, the International Organization for Migration and the Red Cross/Crescent.
Governance and Rule of Law Workgroup, conformed by Security Council members and international organizations such as the International Law Commission and the African Union, and UN offices such as the Office of Legal Affairs and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Environment and Development Workgroup, which will discuss the crisis' impact on the environment and its effects on potential future conflicts. It will also tackle the need for a comprehensive development plan toward Sudan, mainly in the areas of reconstruction, governance and education. Its members include African Union countries, the United Nations Development Programme, Security Council members and various donor countries.
Refugees Workgroup, which will address one of the conflict's most pressing issues, the protection and assistance of over 2 million displaced persons, both in Sudan, Chad and other neighbouring countries. It will be conformed by Security Council and African Union members, the Red Cross/Crescent, and such UN agencies as the UNCHR, UNICEF, the World Health Organization and UN-HABITAT.
