Participation in UPMUN 2007


The University for Peace Model United Nations Conference 2007 will take place on the campus of the Costa Rica headquarters of the University for Peace from 22 to 24 February 2007.

The University is located near Ciudad Colón around 30 kilometres Southwest of San José. For a virtual tour of the Campus, please click here. Transportation will be available from Ciudad Colón (public buses to San José pass every 30min on weekdays and every hour during weekends, from 6am to 10pm).

The event will consist of preparatory workshops (participation optional but recommended) and the actual simulation. The actual simulation will be accompanied by several UPMUN events, like a Diplomatic Reception and several group activities. The exact UPMUNC 2007 Schedule will be published once the Registration Process is opened in January.

Forms of Participation

Participants will fall into one of the following three categories. You can apply for the first or second category, if you fulfil the respective requirements (see further below after the listing).

1. Delegates (students, interns and young professionals), taking up one of five available roles:
a) State Representatives (actual negotiating, drafting and adoption of documents),
b) UN Secretariat Members (conference services, technical expert knowledge, lobbying),
c) Observers/Representatives of International Organizations (lobbying, technical expert knowledge),
d) Observers of NGOs (lobbying, expert knowledge, public pressure),
e) Journalists (reporting, interviewing, press conferences). 2. Advisors/Guests (observing and advising), UPEACE faculty and outside faculty and experts can apply for this role.

3. UPMUNC Secretariat (organization and supervision), UPEACE students, faculty and outside experts who organize this event fall into this category.

Requirements for Participation as Delegate

a) Your Background
You need to be enrolled at a University/College or to have graduated from a University/College at least with a B.A. or similar degree.
We give preference to our own students, partners of the University for Peace, invited institutions and to persons working or studying in Costa Rica. If you are from abroad, comply with all other requirements and want to participate, please contact the UPMUN Coordinator (see Contact Us, above) to inquire about further options.

b) Financial Requirements
The University for Peace is unable to provide financial assistance to non-UPEACE students. Thus, all participants have to be able to cover their own expenses, including the participation fee, their accommodation and their transportation from/to San José or Ciudad Colón.

The participation fee is $20 (twenty U.S. dollars) for UPEACE students and $25 (twenty-five U.S. Dollars) for non-UPEACE students. This covers all materials, the Diplomatic Reception and the additional transportation UPEACE will provide to non-UPEACE students.

c) Language Requirement
All participants need to be able to communicate efficiently in English. Please consider that English will be the only official working language of UPMUN.

d) Registration, Preparations and Instructions
All communications with the UPMUNC Secretariat prior to the actual simulation shall be conducted by e-mail. Most roles will require that delegations meet personally to work on their assignments more effectively.

Otherwise, all participants need to meet the following requirements to receive their Certificate of Completion from UPEACE:
  • Register for the UPMUNC 2007; Registration will open on 1 February 2007 and close on 19 February 2007.
  • Write a Position Paper, no more thann 2,000 words long, on global issues according to their role assignment; prepare themselves for the actual simulation according to the General Instructions that they will receive.
  • Participate in the actual Simulation and act within the framework of their instructions.

Requirements for Participation as Advisor/Guest

The following requirements do not apply to Advisors/Guests invited by the University for Peace.

a) Your Background
You should be the advisor or supervisor of a group of Delegates, or have an institutional interest in observing UPMUNC 2007.

b) Financial Requirements
All Advisors/Guests are required to pay a participation fee of $25 (twenty-five U.S. Dollars).

c) Language Requirement
All participants need to be proficient in English. Be aware that English will be the only official working language of UPMUN.

d) Registration, Preparations and Instructions
Please be further aware, all communications with the UPMUNC Secretariat prior to the actual simulation are conducted by e-mail. You can advise Delegates during their preparations and the Actual Simulation.
