A stellar visit: Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in Costa Rica, H.E. Ben Lyster-Binns, visits the main campus of the University for Peace for the first time
- During his visit, the Ambassador had the opportunity to share his experiences as a diplomat and gave insight into the relationship that exists between the United Kingdom, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
- The visit also provided an opportunity for students to learn first-hand about the requirements and benefits of the Chevening Scholarship programme.
17 February 2022, San José, Costa Rica. The University for Peace (UPEACE) was pleased to welcome the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland to Costa Rica and Nicaragua, H.E. Ben Lyster-Binns, to its main campus in Costa Rica. The Ambassador is responsible for the direction and work of the embassy and its consulates, including political work, trade, investment, press, and cultural relations and consular services. His visit is part of the academic activities that the UPEACE Student Council has prepared in order to promote scholarship and internship opportunities among the student body.
Ms. Denise Lewis, Director of Press, Communication and Political Affairs, presented the Chevening Scholarship, followed by a brief testimonial by Chevening Scholar Edgardo Garcia, of Costa Rican nationality. The Chevening Scholarship is highly coveted among students, as it allows outstanding students and future leaders from around the world to pursue a one-year master's degree at some of the best universities in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, completely free of charge.
Ms. Denisse Maria Soto, President of the current Student Council, said, "Students at the University for Peace have an academic commitment to the challenges that the world faces every day. Recently with BREXIT, there is a lot of interest in the impact it may have on the international relations of the United Kingdom. In the particular case of UK-Costa Rica relations, given the university's approach to sustainable development issues, the Earthshot Prize given to Costa Rica, and the COP26 held in Glasgow, students were particularly interested in the Ambassador's visit to UPEACE. Added to this is the opportunity to learn about the Chevening Scholarship Programme."
H.E. Ben Lyster-Binns then gave a few words about what it means to be a diplomat and the relationship between Costa Rica, the United Kingdom and Nicaragua, and concluded with a question-and-answer session with students.
The Ambassador's visit reinforces the international cooperation that the University for Peace has maintained and continues to maintain with different nations through their Embassies in Costa Rica.

Una visita estelar: Embajador del Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda en Costa Rica, S.E. Ben Lyster-Binns, visita por primera vez el campus principal de la Universidad para la Paz
- Durante su visita, el Embajador tuvo la oportunidad de compartir sus experiencias como diplomático y dio a conocer las relaciones que existen entre Reino Unido, Costa Rica y Nicaragua.
- La visita también se prestó para que los y las estudiantes conocieran de primera mano los requisitos y beneficios para la beca Chevening.
17 de febrero 2022, San José, Costa Rica. El campus principal de la Universidad para la Paz (UPAZ) tuvo el agrado de recibir en sus instalaciones al Embajador de Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda para Costa Rica y Nicaragua, S.E. Ben Lyster-Binns. El Embajador es responsable de la dirección y el trabajo de la embajada y sus consulados, incluyendo trabajo político, comercio, inversión, prensa y relaciones culturales y servicios consulares. Su visita se realiza en el marco de las actividades académicas que el Consejo Estudiantil de la UPAZ ha preparado con el fin de promover oportunidades de becas y pasantías entre el estudiantado.
Asimismo, la Sra. Denise Lewis, Directora de Prensa, Comunicación y Asuntos Políticos, presentó la beca Chevening, seguida de un breve testimonio a cargo del becario Chevening, el costarricense Edgardo García. La beca Chevening es sumamente codiciada entre los y las estudiantes, ya que le permite a estudiantes sobresalientes y futuros líderes de todo el mundo realizar una maestría de un año en algunas de las mejores universidades del Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda de manera completamente gratuita.
La Srta. Denisse María Soto, Presidenta del Consejo Estudiantil de la actual generación, señaló: “Los y las estudiantes de la Universidad para la Paz tenemos un compromiso académico con los desafíos que se presentan a diario en el mundo. Recientemente con el BREXIT, existe mucho interés sobre la afectación que este pueda tener sobre las relaciones internacionales del Reino Unido. En el caso particular de las relaciones UK-Costa Rica, dado el abordaje de la universidad en temas de desarrollo sostenible, el Premio Earthshot dado a Costa Rica y la COP26, celebrada en Glasgow, elevan el interés de los y las estudiantes en la visita del Embajador a la UPAZ. A esto se aúna la oportunidad de aprender sobre el Programa de Becas Chevening”.
Seguidamente, S.E. Ben Lyster-Binns dio unas palabras sobre lo que significa ser diplomático y las relaciones entre Costa Rica, el Reino Unido y Nicaragua para después concluir con una sesión de preguntas y respuestas.
La visita del Embajador refuerza la cooperación internacional que la Universidad para la Paz ha sostenido y sostiene con diferentes naciones, a través de sus Embajadas en Costa Rica.
