The Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations and the University for Peace invite you to:
Interactive Dialogue on the University for Peace, the Role of Education, and the Role of Dialogue in Achieving Sustainable Peace
(Item 51 of Fourth Committee – University for Peace)
Friday, October 26, 2018, 1.15 P.M. to 2.30 P.M.
UNHQ Conference Room No. 11
The Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to the United Nations and the University for Peace, cordially invites you to the above interactive dialogue, organized in conjunction with the presentation of the Triannual Report of the UN Secretary-General on the University for Peace to the UN General Assembly. The forum will be an occasion for participants from the academic world, civil society, governments and UN officials to:
- get a briefing on the University for Peace and its activities and programmes at its main campus in Costa Rica and in various other locations around the world; and
- exchange views about the ways to encourage and mobilize different actors to work together on the promotion of education for peace, with a special emphasis on dialogue and conflict resolution, as one of the most important tool to achieve sustainable peace.
In this regard, it is also intended to secure reiteration of the mandate of the University for Peace, established by the General Assembly through Resolution 35/55 of December 1980 “with a clear determination to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace and with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has stated that “We live in a dangerous world where we see a multiplication of new conflicts and old ones that seem never to die. Prevention is fundamental in our action, but so is inclusive mediation.” These processes require trust, which can best be attained through direct and transparent dialogue, on behalf of all parties involved.
This panel can also serve as a platform for mobilizing further support for education for peace- building by sharing experiences and lessons learned by high-level actors in the international arena, including Members of the Council of the University for Peace, government officials, Member States of the United Nations; and members of civil society, in order to promote dialogue on education for peace building and construction of sustainable peace and how education plays a fundamental role in that construction.
