San Jose, 10 March 2017. The University for Peace (UPEACE) welcomes 39 students from Latin America and the Caribbean, who will spend next week at the Rodrigo Carazo Campus in Ciudad Colon, San Jose, receiving training in Peace and Disarmament issues.
UPEACE and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), in response to the United Nations Security Council, which has recognized the need for women to participate in decision-making processes in the international peace and security arena (UNSCR 1325), partnered to offer the project called ¨Boosting the Advance of Women on Peace-related Issues: Strengthening Tools for Women’s Education.¨
This initiative allows early professional women to deepen their knowledge in disarmament, non-proliferation and development-related issues. The courses will include on-line and in-person lectures on weapons of mass destruction, conventional arms and development-related technologies. It will also introduce the work of entities contributing to peace and development, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive-Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
UPEACE manages the training courses, issuing a certificate or diploma with academic credits to scholarship recipients who fulfil all the necessary requirements to join the course.
