La Universidad para la Paz (UPAZ) rindió homenaje a varias personalidades gubernamentales y diplomáticas cuyo apoyo ha sido fundamental para las labores de la Universidad a lo largo de los últimos cuatro años, entre ellas Su Excelencia, Mercedes Peñas Domingo – Primera Dama de la República, Miembro del Consejo de la UPAZ y egresada de esta institución académica en el año 1992 – Sr. Alejandro Solano – Vice Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto – y el Excmo. Señor Embajador Miguel Ángel González – Embajador de Chile en Costa Rica.
En una sobria y breve ceremonia en el Campus Rodrigo Carazo de la Universidad para la Paz, el Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena – Rector de la UPAZ – agradeció primero al Vice-Canciller Solano por su interés, apoyo y preocupación por las actividades de la UPAZ. Entre otras cosas, el Dr. Rojas destacó el apoyo del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto de Costa Rica y de Alejandro Solano en particular, en la formalización del apoyo económico del Gobierno de Costa Rica a la institución.
Seguidamente, el Rector destacó el apoyo y la amistad del Excmo. Miguel Ángel Gonzalez, Embajador de Chile en Costa Rica, quien ha ofrecido diversas formas de apoyo tanto a las actividades de alto nivel de los jerarcas de la institución como las de los estudiantes de la UPAZ, como el patrocinio del Modelo de Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas, actividad académica que se realiza de manera anual en instituciones académicas alrededor del mundo.
La ceremonia culminó con el homenaje a Su Excelencia Mercedes Peñas Domingo, Primera Dama de la República de Costa Rica, cuyo apoyo y aportes como miembro del Consejo de la Universidad, han permitido un mayor vínculo de la Universidad con el país sede y una mayor visibilidad de la UPAZ a nivel mundial. Dado el estatus de Su Excelencia Mercedes Peñas Domingo como egresada de la Universidad, el Dr. Rojas la condecoró con el título de Egresada Distinguida de la Universidad para la Paz.
“Hoy día podemos decir que es una graduada distinguida. Durante su tiempo en esta universidad, Mercedes Peñas Domingo desarrolló habilidades de cooperación internacional que luego puso al servicio de organismos internacionales vinculados a la actividad del gobierno local en distintas partes. El Presidente Luis Guillermo Solís la designó para el cargo de miembro de nuestro Consejo, destacando su rol como graduada de esta universidad especialista en cooperación. Las opiniones de Mercedes Peñas Domingo en el Consejo han sido muy importantes en la orientación de la universidad y han permitido que quienes tenemos responsabilidades políticas, académicas y administrativas, podamos desarrollar un conjunto de acciones en esa dirección, particularmente en los temas más complejos de la universidad, pero también en los grandes objetivos que debemos alcanzar hacia el futuro. A través de Mercedes y del Presidente Solís, hemos tenido una relación estable y fluida con el Gobierno de Costa Rica.”
Luego de unas palabras del señor Carlos Maldonado – en su rol de Representante a.i. del Sistema de Naciones Unidas en Costa Rica – y de los otros homenajeados, Excmo. Miguel Ángel Gonzalez y Sr. Alejandro Solano, la Primera Dama cerró el acto recordando su tiempo como estudiante de la UPAZ, agradeciendo el reconocimiento recibido y congratulando al Consejo por su trabajo, en particular el Rector Rojas, quien durante su mandato ha logrado fortalecer y reorganizar la institución, además de actualizar los contenidos académicos.
En sus palabras, “La Universidad para la Paz y la cultura de la paz puede transformar las sociedades. Si hay algo que transforma somos las personas y para eso necesitamos conocimientos y habilidades que esta universidad da. Esa posibilidad de transformar nuestros entornos es fundamental para generar paz. Cuando hay violencia contra las mujeres, no hay paz. Cuando hay países que no invierten en el desarrollo sostenible y en el cuidado del ambiente, siempre de la mano de las personas y del desarrollo humano, no hay paz. No hay paz cuando hay hambre. Y no solamente la ausencia de conflicto es paz, el concepto de paz va mucho más allá, y el esfuerzo que ha hecho la Universidad para la Paz, no solamente de posicionar en el sentido amplio la paz, sino de generar esos conocimientos y esas capacidades en las personas para generar esa cultura de paz y para transformar las sociedades, es fundamental. Esta universidad es única y excepcional y tenemos que seguir apostando como país, como Sistema de Naciones Unidas y como personas, a seguir acompañando los esfuerzos de una universidad como esta.”
Al evento también asistieron miembros del cuerpo diplomático en Costa Rica, representantes de Naciones Unidas y de varios organismos internacionales de cooperación, al igual que estudiantes, profesores y funcionarios de la UPAZ.

University for Peace pays tribute to the First Lady of the Republic of Costa Rica, the Vice Chancellor and the Ambassador of Chile in Costa Rica
- The UPAZ pays tribute to three people whose support has been fundamental for the development of the work of the University for Peace.
April 20, 2018 - Campus Rodrigo Carazo, UPEACE. The University for Peace (UPEACE) paid tribute to several governmental and diplomatic personalities whose support has been fundamental for the work of the University over the past four years, including Her Excellency, Mercedes Peñas Domingo - First Lady of the Republic of Costa Rica, Member of the UPEACE Council and graduate from this academic institution in the year 1992 - Mr. Alejandro Solano - Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship - and the Hon. Ambassador Miguel Ángel González - Ambassador of Chile in Costa Rica.
In a sober and brief ceremony at UPEACE’S Rodrigo Carazo Campus, Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena - Rector - first thanked Vice-Chancellor Solano for his interest, support and concern for UPEACE activities. Among other things, Dr. Rojas highlighted the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica and Alejandro Solano in particular, in the formalization of the economic support of the Government of Costa Rica to the institution.
Next, the Rector highlighted the support and friendship of the Hon. Miguel Ángel Gonzalez, Ambassador of Chile in Costa Rica, who has offered various forms of support for both the high-level activities of the institution's leaders and those of UPEACE students, such as the sponsorship of the Model Conference of the United Nations, an academic activity that takes place annually in institutions around the world.
The ceremony culminated with a tribute to Her Excellency Mercedes Peñas Domingo, First Lady of the Republic of Costa Rica, whose support and contributions as a member of the Council of the University, have allowed a greater link between the University and the host country and greater visibility of UPEACE worldwide. Given the status of Her Excellency Mercedes Peñas Domingo as a graduate of the University, Dr. Rojas honored her with the title of Distinguished Graduate of the University for Peace.
"Today we can say that she is a distinguished graduate. During her time at this university, Mercedes Peñas Domingo developed international cooperation skills that she later put at the service of international organizations linked to the activity of the local government in different parts. President Luis Guillermo Solís appointed her to the position of member of our Council, emphasizing her role as a graduate of this university which specializes in cooperation. The opinions of Mercedes Peñas Domingo in the Council have been very important in the orientation of the university and have allowed those of us who have political, academic and administrative responsibilities, to develop a set of actions in that direction, particularly in the most complex issues of the university, but also in the great objectives that we must reach towards the future. Through Mercedes and President Solis, we have had a stable and fluid relationship with the Government of Costa Rica. "
After a few words from Mr. Carlos Maldonado - in his role as a.i. Representative of the United Nations System in Costa Rica - and the other honorees, His Excellency, Miguel Ángel Gonzalez and Mr. Alejandro Solano, the First Lady closed the event by remembering her time as a UPEACE student, thanking the recognition received and congratulating the Council for their work, in particular Rector Rojas, who during his tenure has managed to strengthen and reorganize the institution, in addition to updating the academic content.
In her words, "The University for Peace and the culture of peace can transform societies. If there is something that transforms it is us, the people, and for that we need knowledge and skills that this university gives. This possibility of transforming our environments is fundamental to generating peace. When there is violence against women, there is no peace. When there are countries that do not invest in sustainable development and care for the environment, always in the hands of people and human development, there is no peace. There is no peace when there is hunger. And not only the absence of conflict is peace, the concept of peace goes much further, and the effort that the University for Peace has made, not only to position peace in the broad sense, but to generate that knowledge and those capabilities in people to generate that culture of peace and to transform societies, is fundamental . This university is unique and exceptional and we have to continue betting as a country, as a United Nations System and as people, to continue accompanying the efforts of a university like this one. "
Members of the diplomatic corps in Costa Rica, representatives of the United Nations and various international cooperation agencies, as well as students, professors and UPEACE officials also participated in the event.
