University for Peace Celebrates 2020 Commencement in a Virtual Ceremony
9 June 2020 - San Jose, Costa Rica. The University for Peace (UPEACE) today celebrated the end of the 2019-2020 academic year with a virtual Commencement Ceremony. Due to the current reality in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, the University had to rethink the traditional commencement ceremony celebrated on its campus, attended by students and their family and friends, who fly in from all over the world to celebrate our graduates.
This year, Commencement consisted of a pre-recorded video that attempted to recreate, as faithfully as possible, the ceremony as it would have been celebrated on campus. The video included words by the University’s Rector, the Dean and Resident Faculty members, as well as a message from the Student Representative, Ms. Melissa Bosc, who was also President of this year’s Student Council.
Since 16 March, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Costa Rican government’s announcement of a yellow alert and quarantine to prevent the spread of the contagion, the University managed to transition all face-to-face courses to an online modality. The Costa Rican government has since then gradually lifted restrictions and allowed for a return to most economic activities; however, large events are still prohibited, forcing UPEACE to attempt to honour the Class of 2020 in a more creative way.
This year’s graduating cohort was made up of 118 students from more than 30 different countries. Around 66% of the graduates are female. This ceremony marks the completion of their academic year. Students must now complete an internship or graduation project in order to receive their official Master’s Degree.
Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena, UPEACE Rector, addressed the viewers by saying that he missed the students and their smiles, and went on to say:
“In times of pandemic, we recognize and see injustice and inequality more strongly. To face them, the way is through the protection of all human rights. At the University for Peace, you have received and developed knowledge, techniques, and tools for a new leadership. One of them is critical thinking and the ability to understand the deep roots of different conflicts. You will start on a path that calls on you to create new visions, new routes, and new ideas for a new post-pandemic and post-crisis reality. You are the 40th Anniversary cohort of the University for Peace, reaffirming the mission of the university: ‘to promote a spirit of understanding, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among all human beings.” And today, more than ever, between us and the planet.’”
The University was honoured by the message delivered by this year’s Keynote Speaker, Ms. Alice Shackelford, UN Resident Coordinator in Costa Rica. Ms. Shackelford greeted the students by saying they are the generation that will be responsible for implementing the 2030 Agenda. “I see you as the leaders of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly with regards to the motto of ‘leaving no one behind’.”
“There’s lots to do!”, continued Shackelford, “there are also a lot of opportunities available as a result of this pandemic, in the middle of this terrible crisis we find ourselves in, an opportunity to truly build a different world, a different society, much more inclusive, much more resilient, and much greener and environmentally-friendly. So congratulations to each and every one of you and good luck to all of you in finding the way, the space, and the mechanism to make this change.”

Universidad para la Paz celebra Graduación 2020 con ceremonia virtual
9 de junio de 2020 - San José, Costa Rica. La Universidad para la Paz (UPAZ) celebró hoy el cierre del año académico 2019-2020 con una Ceremonia de Graduación virtual. Debido a la realidad actual frente a la pandemia del coronavirus, la Universidad tuvo que repensar la tradicional ceremonia de graduación celebrada en su campus, a la que asisten estudiantes y sus familiares y amigos, que viajan desde todo el mundo para celebrar a los graduados.
Este año, la graduación consistió en un video pregrabado que intentaba recrear, lo más fielmente posible, la ceremonia como se habría celebrado en el campus. El vídeo incluye palabras del Rector de la Universidad, del Decano y de los profesores residentes, así como un mensaje de la Representante Estudiantil, Melissa Bosc, quien también fue Presidente del Consejo Estudiantil de este año.
Desde el 16 de marzo debido a la pandemia del COVID-19 y el anuncio del gobierno de Costa Rica de una alerta amarilla y cuarentena para prevenir la propagación del contagio, la Universidad logró la transición de todos los cursos cara a cara a la modalidad en línea. Desde entonces, el gobierno costarricense ha levantado gradualmente las restricciones y ha permitido el retorno a la mayoría de las actividades económicas; sin embargo, los eventos grandes todavía están prohibidos, lo que obliga a UPAZ a intentar honrar la Clase del 2020 de una manera más creativa.
Este año la cohorte estaba compuesta de 118 estudiantes de más de 30 países diferentes. Alrededor del 66% de los graduados son mujeres. Esta ceremonia marca la finalización de su año académico. Los estudiantes ahora deben completar una pasantía o un proyecto de graduación para recibir su título oficial.
El Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena, Rector de UPAZ, se dirigió a los espectadores diciendo que extrañaba a los estudiantes y sus sonrisas, y continuó diciendo:
“En tiempos de pandemia reconocemos y evidenciamos con fuerza la injusticia y las inequidades. Para enfrentarlas el camino es la protección de todos los derechos humanos. En la Universidad para la Paz ustedes han recibido y desarrollado conocimientos, técnicas, herramientas para el nuevo liderazgo. Una de ellas es el pensamiento crítico, capaz de comprender las raíces profundas de las diferentes conflictividades. Vosotros iniciareis un camino que los llama a crear nuevas visiones, nuevas rutas y nuevas ideas para una nueva realidad post-pandemia, post-crisis. Ustedes son la generación del 40 Aniversario de la Universidad para la Paz, ustedes están reafirmando la misión de la universidad: ‘trabajar para promover el espíritu de comprensión, tolerancia, relaciones pacíficas entre los seres humanos’. Y hoy, más que ayer, entre nosotros y el planeta.”
La Universidad fue honrada con un mensaje pronunciado por la Sra. Alice Shackelford, Coordinadora Residente de Naciones Unidas en Costa Rica. La Sra. Shackelford saludó a los estudiantes diciendo que son la generación que será responsable de implementar la Agenda 2030. "Los veo como los líderes de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible, particularmente con respecto al lema de 'no dejar a nadie atrás'".
“¡Hay mucho que hacer!”, continuó Shackelford, “también hay muchas oportunidades disponibles como resultado de esta pandemia, en medio de esta terrible crisis en la que nos encontramos, una oportunidad para construir verdaderamente un mundo diferente, una sociedad diferente, mucho más inclusiva, mucho más resiliente y mucho más ecológica y amigable con el ambiente. Así que felicidades y buena suerte a todos para encontrar el camino, el espacio y el mecanismo para hacer este cambio."
