University for Peace Launches the Peace Innovation Initiative with Support from the Naveen and Anu Jain Family Foundation

The Peace Innovation Initiative and the Naveen and Anu Jain Family Foundation Join Hands to Pursue Preventive Pathways to Peace Worldwide

BELLEVUE, Washington, January 2022 - The Peace Innovation Initiative (PII), a peacebuilding initiative from the Commission for Peace, founded by Barbara Winston in partnership with the University for Peace (UPEACE), receives its first significant contribution towards its mission from the Naveen and Anu Jain Family Foundation. Naveen Jain, Founder and CEO of Viome, a global health and wellness company focused on preventative health, announced today that his family foundation is joining forces with PII to support research and development in preventive healthcare. The Foundation’s contribution will support PII and UPEACE in launching their DNA of Peace Fellowship Program and building out their research line on peace innovation and health technology. Naveen Jain brings to the table his expertise in prevention, early diagnostics, and knowledge in revolutionary science for healthcare services to support PII’s research. Anu Jain, an entrepreneur and philanthropist focused on healthcare, girls and women, and technologies that improve the lives of people around the world, has joined the Commission for Peace and will serve as an Ambassador to the University of Peace.

The mission of PII is to build a global culture of peace through peace-inspired innovation. As such, PII – along with UPEACE – supports the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. PII is devoted to partnering with others who are devoted to the UN SDGs. As Naveen and Anu Jain understand, only communities in good health can achieve sustainable peace. With this first contribution, PII believes it will be successful in achieving “good health and well-being,” which is listed as UN Sustainable Development Goal 3. As part of its first endeavours, PII will launch a research vertical devoted to preventive healthcare technologies.

Naveen Jain has a proven track record, through his work at Viome Life Sciences, of successfully transforming “sick-care” to preventive care and keeping communities healthy. Chronic diseases, the cause of most deaths worldwide according to the World Health Organization, have become an epidemic in the last 30 years. Statistics show that the majority of the global population is on their way to developing cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, cancer, lung diseases, depression, and more. Through his company, Viome Life Sciences, as well as in his philanthropic work, he is dedicated to leveraging technology to create preventive care and make health accessible to everyone worldwide. PII is aligned with their approach toward harnessing technology for prevention and positive peace.

“We are thrilled to have Naveen and Anu Jain join our mission. As part of our effort to build innovative solutions for peace, PII is committed to affordable preventive healthcare technologies. Communities across the world face serious, ongoing health problems – a majority of which are preventable. It is imperative that we focus on holistic approaches to peacebuilding that harness the capacities of the brightest minds and newest technologies for real social impact,” said Peace Innovation Initiative President, Barbara Winston.

“Naveen understands the way for healthcare to tend to the biological individuality of each person, in a way that creates access and prevention for all people - by combining their knowledge and resources with PII’s wide-reaching ecosystem, we will be able to significantly improve the health and wellbeing of all humans,” emphasized by Zulfiquar Ghadiyali, Member of the Commission for Peace and UPEACE Ambassador.

With this contribution, PII will provide avenues for original collaborative research worldwide, harnessing the strengths and abilities of the global scientific community.

"I am really excited to be part of bringing innovation into the peacebuilding process and the understanding of the use of advanced technologies to improving human care and life. I am grateful to Anu and Naveen for a shared vision, the unbending interest to making the world a better place and advancing fields of science with the intent of better and longer healthier lives,” said Gordon Winston, Member of the Commission for Peace and UPEACE Ambassador.

“Humanity is at a crossroads, but we fortunately now possess the technologies that allow us to act in advance of catastrophe, conflict and illness. Never before have we had such a perfect storm of innovation that allows us to progress so rapidly to improve the health and wellbeing of humanity,” stated Naveen Jain, Founder and CEO of Viome Life Sciences.

PII understands that innovation in peacebuilding requires sustainable programs. To that end, PII is creating pathways for partnerships with likeminded organizations, both public and private. Based on its original research, PII will support its partners’ integration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals into their existing programs and workflow processes, as well as invest in their own development of new innovations that create true synergy between peace, sustainability and technology.

Drawing from premier research and foundational theories of peace and conflict, the action-oriented Peace Innovation Initiative will aggregate top institutions and individuals from all disciplines and society sectors to take collective action toward practical and widely, readily available solutions to conflict.

By bringing synergy and cohesion to the international community, the Initiative will serve as the global laboratory for peace, committed to the practice of our humanity, self-reflection, efficient problem-solving, and radical practicality. PII will galvanize multilateral efforts and exert a powerful muscle, pursuing innovation, being nimble and responsive in real time.

Barbara Winston shares, “We are looking to achieve excellence in putting together the unlimited knowledge that we have from the beginning of man’s historical journey. We are going to amalgamate them and put them in a fashion that we can use all the knowledge and be able to distribute it in an efficient manner to humankind. We are most grateful to Naveen and Anu Jain for their true leadership and commitment to this effort and in bringing health and wellbeing for everyone as a foundation for peace.”

About the Peace Innovation Initiative

The Peace Innovation Initiative (PII) is built to create a global culture of peace through peace-inspired innovation. In partnership with the University for Peace, founded in 1980, PII is building an ecosystem for sustainable peacebuilding by bringing all society sectors together and harnessing their relative strengths and insights to innovate for change. PII envisions a world where our global systems are built on a foundational framework for sustainable, positive peace. In order to create such a world, PII will: invest in original, collaborative research on peace & technology; build a digital peace education platform; design & build peace innovation projects and products; create commercialization opportunities for peace innovations; engage in high-level media campaigns and public talks; and build and offer training and consultation to the private sector and interested institutions on peace, peace innovation and integration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). PII will operate in a self-sustaining manner, where PII's outputs support its infrastructure, in a circular model. In this way, PII values peace as a practice and believes such circular systems are the most effective way to create positive change and achieve the SDGs.

About the Commission for Peace

About the University for Peace

The University for Peace (UPEACE) is an international entity established in pursuance of United Nations Assembly Resolution 35/55 of December 1980. The unique history of UPEACE makes it the only University in the world created through a UN General Assembly Resolution with the specific mandate of “engaging in teaching, research, post-graduate training and dissemination of knowledge fundamental to the full development of the human person and societies through the interdisciplinary study of all matters relating to peace.” As a result, it possesses a unique global legal authorization to grant Master and Doctorate degrees as conferred upon it by the resolution that created it as well as by the International Agreement for the Establishment of UPEACE and the accompanying Charter annexed to Resolution 35/55. The University for Peace has been educating leaders for peace for more than 40 years. It has graduated over 2500 students that work in more than 120 countries around the world, searching for sustainable peace on the field,  working with civil society, as public servants, as police or armed forces personnel,  in  NGOs, governments, UN agencies or other international organizations and many other institutions around the world;

Through its partnership with PII, UPEACE plans to open The Global Center of Peace Innovation in a year’s time, where PII will house all its activities, from digital educational programs, scholarly research and peace-tech project and product development. The Center, headquartered at the University for Peace, will operate immediately on a global scale, engaging the various Centers of Excellence and University for Peace Centers around the world, from Costa Rica to The Hague, Geneva, India and the Middle East.
