- The objective of this round table is to provide an opportunity to discuss the challenges posed by increasing levels of violence and displacement in the North Triangle of Central America.
6-7 July, 2016. San José, Costa Rica. Delegates of the UN-mandated University for Peace participated at the OAS-UNHCR high level round table on the 'Call to Action: Protection Crisis in the Northern Triangle of Central America', hosted by the Government of Costa Rica and supported by the Central American Integration System (SICA).
The objective of this round table is to provide an opportunity to discuss the challenges posed by increasing levels of violence and displacement in the North Triangle of Central America, and to explore ways to assist countries of origin transit and asylum in responding to the protection and assistance needs of those affected by the situation.
In this context, the framework of the Inter-American System for the protection of human rights and the 2014 Brazil Declaration and Plan of Action, together with the principles of international cooperation, regional solidarity and responsibility sharing that have guided humanitarian action in the Americas for decades, helped frame the discussion.
The outcomes of the round table will contribute to the high-level plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on addressing large movements of refugees and migrants, which will be held on 19 September 2016.
At the event participated government officials from countries in North and Central America, other interested States, intergovernmental organisations, civil society, and relevant humanitarian and academic partners.
