16 November 2016, Africa - The Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (DNP) Education Partnership coordinated by the United Nationsn Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) in Vienna and the University for Peace in Costa Rica organized two courses this past November, one in Cairo and the other one in Addis Ababa.
This initiative has the objective of providing career women professionals with tools to deepen their knowledge in disarmament, non-proliferation and development-related issues. The course included lectures on weapons of mass destruction, conventional arms and development-related technologies, Gender and Disarmament, the Impact of Conflict and a Negotiation Workshop where they had the opportunity to implement the knowledge they acquired.
Participants who completed the modules, online exams and course requirements will obtain a certificate from the UN mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) and may apply for a Diploma with University credits.
The workshop for Middle East took place from 6 to 10 November 2016 in the League for Arab States Headquarters in Egypt. The 25 participants came from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen. Of these, 20 had a scholarship called “Women Scholarship for Peace” and 5 were participants from the League of Arab States.
On the other hand, the second workshop was from 15 to 19 November in Nexus Hotel, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and gathered 39 participants with a “Women Scholarship for Peace” from Botswana, Burkina Faso, Chad, Congo, The Democratic Republic of, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
During both trainings, participants built strong relationships, learnt about different subjects related to peacebuilding and had the chance to do networking, which reflected in a very strong participation and collaboration during the development of the workshop.
