2nd July, 2015. University for Peace Campus - With the aim to give other students the chance to study at UPEACE as part of the academic cohort 2015-2016, a group of alumni launched a fundraising campaign to collect $10,000 to be used for scholarships for motivated students who, despite tuition waivers, are not able to attend UPEACE without additional help.
The movement started this week via the crowdrise platform and will finish on 20 July, 2015.
“The campaign is set up so that any size donation can be made, so we hope to have a whole lot of people give whatever they can to reach the goal. $10,000 would allow 2 promising candidates to experience the special year at UPEACE” said, Laurel Gaylor, UPEACE Alumna, MA in International Peace Studies (2009).
“We have identified a number of students that have been offered partial tuition waivers, have incredible profiles, but are not able to attend because of financial constraints. If you care about UPEACE, it's an amazing way to give back, and if you just care about peace and education, it isn't so bad either,” added Julia Delafield, MA in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (2010).
The campaign is starting out to help one student in particular; his name is Richard and he grew up working in the tourism industry in rural La Fortuna, Costa Rica. He gained a passion for the natural world and through his interaction with tourists learned about the importance of sustainable development. Volunteering with a turtle conservation programme in his spare time, Richard managed to obtain a law degree, and now he is ready to take his education further. Richard applied to the MA in Environment, Development and Peace MA programme, and was accepted with a 50% tuition waiver, but will be unable to attend without additional help.
