Turin, Italy – The University for Peace (UPEACE) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) have inaugurated the thirteenth edition of the Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Transnational Crime and Justice with a ceremony at the Turin campus in the north of Italy.
The event offered a unique opportunity to meet with Judge Navi Pillay who is Judge ad hoc on the International Court of Justice (in Gambia v. Myanmar), President of the Advisory Council of the Nuremberg Principles Academy, as well as President of the International Commission against the Death Penalty. Judge Pillay served as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (2008 – 2014), as President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and as Judge of the International Criminal Court (2003-2008). She was the first woman judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (1995-2003) where she ruled, for the first time, that sexual violence in conflict was a crime against humanity. In 1995, President Nelson Mandela appointed Ms. Pillay as a judge at the High Court of South Africa. She was the first black woman and first attorney to serve in this position.
The ceremony included the key-note speech “Lessons learned and future challenges in addressing atrocity crimes and human rights violation”, by Judge Navi Pillay. Other high level representatives taking part in the event were Leif Villadsen, Deputy Director, UNICRI; Dr. Mihir Kanade, Professor, Director of the Human Rights Centre, UPEACE; Roberto Rivello, Judge, Secretary General Turin Court of Appeal; Mr. Stefano Castellani, Turin Prosecutor’s Office and Anti-Mafia Bureau; Ms. Elena Rocci, Judge, Tribunal of Turin; Colonel Andrea Monti, Director of the Post Conflict Operations Study Centre, Italian Army; and Councilor Claudio Strata, Attorney-at-Law, Member of the Turin Bar Council.
This Master programme is organised by the University for Peace (UPEACE) in partnership with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). The LL.M. aims to address the topical issues and the main priorities of the international community, focusing on issues related to peace and conflicts. This special training opportunity will allow participants to specialize in the fields of humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights law, international law dimensions of peace and conflicts, transnational crimes and transitional justice.
This year’s cohort consists of 50 students coming from 18 different countries that will be attending lessons at UNICRI for the next 5 months.

Maestría en Leyes (LL.M.) en Crimen y Justicia Transnacional

Turín, Italia - La Universidad para la Paz (UPAZ) y el Instituto de Investigación Interregional sobre Delincuencia y Justicia de las Naciones Unidas (UNICRI) han inaugurado la decimotercera edición del Máster en Derecho (LL.M.) en Crimen y Justicia Transnacional con una ceremonia en el campus de Turín, en el norte de Italia.
El evento ofreció una oportunidad única para reunirse con la juez Navi Pillay, quien es juez ad hoc en la Corte Internacional de Justicia (en Gambia v. Myanmar), presidente del Consejo Asesor de la Academia de Principios de Nuremberg, así como presidente de la Comisión Internacional contra la pena de muerte. La juez Pillay se desempeñó como Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos (2008 - 2014), como Presidente del Tribunal Penal Internacional para Ruanda y como Juez de la Corte Penal Internacional (2003-2008). Fue la primera jueza y Presidenta del Tribunal Penal Internacional para Ruanda (1995-2003) donde dictaminó, por primera vez, que la violencia sexual en los conflictos era un crimen de lesa humanidad. En 1995, el presidente Nelson Mandela designó a la Sra. Pillay como juez en el Tribunal Superior de Sudáfrica. Ella fue la primera mujer negra y el primer abogado en ocupar este puesto.
La ceremonia incluyó el discurso principal "Lecciones aprendidas y desafíos futuros para abordar los crímenes atroces y la violación de los derechos humanos", a cargo de la juez Navi Pillay. Otros representantes de alto nivel que participaron en el evento fueron Leif Villadsen, Director Adjunto, UNICRI; Dr. Mihir Kanade, Profesor, Director del Centro de Derechos Humanos, UPAZ; Roberto Rivello, Juez, Secretario General Tribunal de Apelaciones de Turín; Sr. Stefano Castellani, Fiscalía de Turín y Oficina Antimafia; Sra. Elena Rocci, Juez, Tribunal de Turín; Coronel Andrea Monti, Director del Centro de Estudio de Operaciones Post Conflicto, Ejército Italiano; y el concejal Claudio Strata, abogado, miembro del Consejo de Abogados de Turín.
Este programa de maestría está organizado por la Universidad para la Paz (UPAZ) en asociación con el Instituto de Investigación Interregional de Crimen y Justicia de las Naciones Unidas (UNICRI). El LL.M. tiene como objetivo abordar los temas de actualidad y las principales prioridades de la comunidad internacional, centrándose en temas relacionados con la paz y los conflictos. Esta oportunidad especial de capacitación permitirá a los participantes especializarse en los campos del derecho humanitario, el derecho penal internacional, el derecho internacional de los derechos humanos, las dimensiones del derecho internacional de la paz y los conflictos, los crímenes transnacionales y la justicia de transición.
La cohorte de este año consta de 50 estudiantes provenientes de 18 países diferentes que asistirán a clases en UNICRI durante los próximos 5 meses.
