UPEACE participates in Seminar on Human Rights, Transnational Enterprises and Social Corporate Responsibility in Tabasco, Mexico

11 and 12 January, 2016. Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico - Within the framework of the Human Rights, Transnational Enterprises and Social Corporate Responsibility Seminar, the University for Peace, represented by Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo – Dean for International Cooperation – visited the city of Villahermosa, Mexico, with the aim of presenting a fresh vision of Human Rights and Corporate Responsibility. Dean Sainz-Borgo gave a lecture on human rights within the context of recent UN reforms in light of its 70th Anniversary, as well as the new 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Objectives.

UPEACE signed an agreement with the Juarez de Tabasco Autonomous University (UJAT) last year. As part of the first activity under the agreement, Dr. Sainz-Borgo met with the Rector of UJAT, who proposed the implementation of a new project where UPEACE supports the projects sponsored by Mexican Petroleum (PEMEX) in the area, so that groups of doctoral student can receive training on issues pertaining to environmental protection and sustainable development. This seminar was organized by the Juarez de Tabasco Autonomous University (UJAT) and the Olmeca University of Mexico, with support from the Alfonso X University in Spain.

Since the main industry in the city of Villahermosa – Tabasco’s department capital – revolves around activities related to oil and field exploitation, Dean Sainz-Borgo also met with a PEMEX Oil Engineer, responsible for their training programmes, to discuss topics of climate change and sustainability and their relationship to the green industry, which represents an excellent option for the future of the city of Tabasco.
