The Rector of the University for Peace signed a cooperation agreement between the UPEACE and the International Criminal Court on 17 October 2016.
Taking into account that this body has full capacity to judge the individual or collective responsibility for crimes, genocides and serious human rights violations of international significance that interfere with the establishment of peace within nations, the agreement with the International Criminal Court represents an opportunity for the University and its students to actively participate in global justice.
Among the points established by the agreement is the opportunity for students in masters programmes and UPEACE alumni to participate in internships and apply to job opportunities that allow them to expand horizons and develop as professionals with strong backgrounds in Human Rights, Justice and Peace. It also offers the opportunity to officials of the International Criminal Court to enjoy the facilities of the University for research or sabbatical leave.
During this important visit Dr. Rojas had the opportunity to also meet with Judge Silvia Fernandez de Gurmendi, Argentinian lawyer and judge who presides the International Criminal Court since 2015. Additionally, the UPEACE Rector spoke with Registrar Herman Von Hebel, who was very interested and energetic by the cooperation agreement signed.
As part of the academic offer, supplementary courses will be offered for attorneys and for those interested in justice issues, which will have specialized professors from both institutions and will contribute to the development of students.
Aside from the Rector, the UPEACE delegation who traveled to the International Criminal Court based in The Hague, was comprised by Dean Juan Carlos Sainz Borgo, and the project coordinator Laura Arroyo, who personally met with Marius Enthoven, director of the UPEACE center in The Hague and professor Nika Salvetti to discuss and reaffirm their commitment to education, justice and cooperation between the institutions.
