UPEACE Supports Philippines After Typhoon Haiya

13 November, 2013. University for Peace Campus - In early November, Typhoon Haiyan devastated Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. It is considered the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record with at least 5,500 lives lost. In honor of the millions of people affected in the Philippines, Peace Education students, led by Professor Virginia Cawagas (who is from the Philippines) and three Filipino students, organized a lunch gathering that included traditional Filipino songs and dance.

The event raised awareness about the destruction caused by Typhoon Haiyan, brought UPEACE student body together in solidarity, and raised funds for the relief efforts. The donation was sent to the Philippine Red Cross. Many other students sent their donation directly to several international organizations offering humanitarian aid. The gathering served as a source of healing for Filipino students and faculty, as well as provided an outlet for others to support.
