- Local mayor Gilberto Monge welcomed new students to UPEACE and to the Mora Canton.
21 August, 2015. University for Peace Campus - On 19 and 20 August 2015, the University for Peace (UPEACE) welcomed new students to the 2015-2016 academic year.
The orientation process kicked off with the words of the Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Sara Sharratt, and of the Dean for International Cooperation, Dr. Juan Carlos Sainz-Borgo, who welcomed students and invited them to maximize their time at UPEACE, both in regards to their personal and professional growth. They also shared the history of the University and reinforced its ties with the United Nations and its mission of promoting peace and conflict resolution, which UPEACE does through the transversal inclusion of these themes in its different MA programmes.
Mr. Gilberto Mora, Mayor of the Mora Municipality, served as keynote speaker, taking advantage of his time to introduce the municipality and explain the important role it plays in the community. He also introduced several of the municipality’s recreational, sporting, and educational projects and encouraged students to take part in them.
UPEACE Orientation continued with a series of presentations from the different Academic and Administrative Departments, as well as on topics of particular relevance to new students, such as multicultural understanding and tolerance, personal safety in Costa Rica, and sexual harassment and violence, among others.
These 140 students representing 41 different countries will begin their MA, Doctoral, and Semester Abroad programmes next week in the three main focus areas of the University: International Law and Human Rights, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Environment and Development.
We wish our new students a productive and transformative academic year!
