About Ciudad Colón
Although the city is small, Ciudad Colon is one of the most multi-cultural towns in the entire world, thanks in large part to the presence of students from the University for Peace, which brings in people from all over the world. It is located about 45 minutes away from the capital of San Jose and about 20 minutes from Escazu, a modern suburb home to Multiplaza Mall, as well as a vast gastronomic offer and lively nightlife.
Because of its large number of foreign residents, Ciudad Colon is widely English-speaking, which should make it easier to get your bearings when you first arrive. Despite its cosmopolitan vibe, Ciudad Colon remains deeply rooted in its local traditions, including a weekly Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, and an Organic Market on Tuesdays, both held at the Town Square, where incidentally, on certain weekdays, free Zumba lessons are offered.
The weather is typically warm and humid, especially near El Rodeo, where the UPEACE Campus is located. It also has a lower cost-of-living than Escazu and Santa Ana, the closest towns over. It is also particularly well-suited for outdoor activities, such as biking, horseback riding, and hiking in the mountains that surround the city. There are many mountain paths that you can take to see stunning views of the area, the flora and fauna in the region and the lovely waterfalls.
