• La Universidad para la Paz le otorgó el Doctorado Honoris Causa al presidente de Colombia, Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, el pasado 28 de agosto, en el contexto de su discurso inaugural del año académico 2023-2024.

San José, Costa Rica. 29 de agosto de 2023. Esta semana, la Universidad para la Paz tuvo el honor de conferir el título de Doctor Honoris Causa al señor Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, presidente de la República de Colombia, en el contexto de la inauguración oficial del año académico 2023-2024 en su campus principal en Costa Rica, en la cual el Presidente Petro brindó la charla inaugural.

La ceremonia fue presidida por el rector de la Universidad para la Paz, Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena. La misma contó con la asistencia de figuras importantes a nivel nacional e internacional, incluyendo la Subsecretaria General de Naciones Unidas, Rebeca Grynspan; la Coordinadora Residente del Sistema de Naciones Unidas en Costa Rica, Allegra Baiocchi; la Ministra de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto ad interim de Costa Rica, Lydia Peralta Cordero; la Secretaría General de la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Josette Altmann Borbón; representantes de gobierno de ambas naciones; así como representantes del cuerpo diplomático y de organismos internacionales acreditados en Costa Rica.

La inauguración inició con el otorgamiento del Doctorado Honoris Causa de la Universidad para la Paz al Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego como un reconocimiento a su significativa trayectoria en el ámbito político y su compromiso con la promoción y búsqueda de la paz y la justicia social. Con esta distinción, la Universidad para la Paz exalta su liderazgo y visión en la búsqueda de un mejor futuro para su país y la región.

La Universidad para la Paz, establecida por la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas en 1980, es una institución global en el ámbito académico y de investigación, dedicada a la educación para la paz y la capacitación en resolución y transformación de conflictos.

En su introducción, el Rector de la Universidad para la Paz, Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena, destacó: “La Universidad para la Paz tiene el compromiso fundamental de promover la Paz y la resolución de conflictos a través de la educación, la investigación, la cooperación y la acción. En este contexto, es un honor destacar al Presidente Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, cuyo compromiso con la construcción de una sociedad más equitativa y pacífica está dejando una huella imborrable en la historia contemporánea de Colombia. Su enfoque en la justicia social, la inclusión y participación de mujeres, indígenas y otros actores en el diálogo, como pilar para el progreso, refleja los valores fundamentales que compartimos en esta institución, buscando la Paz”.

En su laudatio el Vicerrector Juan Carlos Sainz Borgo recalcó “El proceso de paz que se está liderando en Colombia es fundamental para una sociedad que ha supervivido décadas de conflicto; también para la región y para el mundo entero. No en valde el Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas recibe un reporte semestral de los progresos, no solo en cese al fuego o la dejación de armas, sino también de las garantías para los excombatientes y del funcionamiento de un sistema de justicia transicional que pueda cerrar tantas heridas. La paz total en Colombia será una paz que tendrá un impacto regional para las nuevas generaciones de latinoamericanas y latinoamericanos que anhelan vivir en paz y hermanados como un solo pueblo”.

El presidente de Colombia, Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego aceptó el título honorario y procedió a impartir la charla inaugural del año académico 2023-2024. Al cierre de su discurso concluyó, “En nuestra memoria podríamos pasar a ser sociedades pacíficas, podríamos pasar a ser democracias profundas y multicolores. Podríamos extinguir la palabra conflicto armado del mundo con toda su complejidad. La humanidad, si no resuelve su propia división violenta, no podrá reconciliarse con la naturaleza”.

La Universidad para la Paz reconoce el valioso aporte del Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego a la promoción de los valores universales de paz, justicia y solidaridad y celebra la oportunidad de compartir este momento histórico con la comunidad académica y la sociedad en general.

The University for Peace inaugurated its academic year with the visit of the President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego

  • The University for Peace awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa to the President of Colombia, Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, on August 28th, during his inaugural speech for the 2023-2024 academic year.

San Jose, Costa Rica. 29 August 2023. This week, the University for Peace had the honor of conferring the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, President of the Republic of Colombia, in the context of the official inauguration of the 2023-2024 academic year at its main campus in Costa Rica, where President Petro gave the inaugural lecture.

The ceremony was presided over by the Rector of the University for Peace, Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena. It was attended by important national and international figures, including the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Rebeca Grynspan; the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Costa Rica, Allegra Baiocchi; the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica, Lydia Peralta Cordero; the Secretary-General of the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, Josette Altmann Borbón; government representatives from both nations, as well as representatives from the diplomatic corps and accredited international organizations in Costa Rica.

The inauguration began with the conferral of the Honorary Doctorate by the University for Peace upon Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, in recognition of his significant trajectory in the political realm and his commitment to the promotion and pursuit of peace and social justice. With this distinction, the University for Peace highlights his leadership and vision in the pursuit of a better future for his country and the region.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1980, the University for Peace is a global institution in the academic and research fields, dedicated to education for peace and training in conflict resolution and transformation.

In his opening remarks, the Rector of the University for Peace, Dr. Francisco Rojas Aravena, emphasized: “The University for Peace is fundamentally committed to promoting peace and conflict resolution through education, research, cooperation, and action. In this context, it is an honor to highlight President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, whose commitment to building a more equitable and peaceful society is leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary history of Colombia. His focus on social justice, inclusion, and the participation of women, indigenous people, and other stakeholders in dialogue, as a pillar for progress, reflects the core values we share in this institution, in pursuit of peace.”

In his laudatio, Vice Rector Juan Carlos Sainz Borgo emphasized, “The peace process being led in Colombia is crucial for a society that has endured decades of conflict; it is also important for the region and for the entire world. Not in vain does the United Nations Security Council receive a semi-annual report on its progress, not only in terms of ceasefire or disarmament, but also in the guarantees for ex-combatants and the functioning of a transitional justice system that can heal so many wounds. Total peace in Colombia will have a regional impact for the new generations of Latin Americans who aspire to live in peace and unity as one people.”

Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, President of Colombia, accepted the degree and proceeded to deliver the inaugural lecture for the 2023-2024 academic year. In concluding his speech, he stated, “In our memory, we could become peaceful societies; we could become deep and multicolored democracies. We could erase the term ‘armed conflict’ from the world, with all its complexity. Humanity, if it doesn’t resolve its own violent division, cannot reconcile with nature.”

The University for Peace acknowledges the valuable contribution of Dr. Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego to the promotion of universal values of peace, justice, and solidarity, and celebrates the opportunity to share this historic moment with the academic community and society at large.
